Nigeria will have to bid for a second Olympic football gold medal without Marseille full back Taye Taiwo after his French club refused to release him.
A Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling allowed the return of several Under-23 players to their clubs.
CAS on Wednesday upheld an appeal from clubs after FIFA had said they were obliged to release eligible players for the Olympics.
Nigeria's Olympic football coach Samson Siasia said the absence of the 23-year-old Taiwo, who has drawn comparisons with Brazil's Roberto Carlos, would not affect the team's chances.
"The club has refused to release (Taiwo)," he said on Friday. "I'm very very disappointed. But one individual cannot make or break a team. It takes a team to win the medal and in spite of everything training is going well."
Nigeria's squad includes Victor Anichebe of England's Everton, Peter Odemwingie of Lokomotiv Moscow and Sani Kaita of Sparta Rotterdam.
Nigeria caused an upset at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics when they beat Argentina in the final to become the first African nation to win a major football tournament.

It could be that, if Taiwo has being forced to go to China, the babe Eagles, may be they will not grab the Gold, so we should not blame any body about his absence.Only BABA Gold knows why it happend like that.
But any way sha, i just wish our sweet eagles good luck, cause the God of 1996 Olympic will still follow them till they come back with the gold to Africa. NIGERIA.
Good luck Eagles.
Onyi.... Idumota
shame on MARSELLE, shame on FRENCH caurse they nows taiwo is a nigerian for chris sake, shame on FIFA,shame on OLYPIC COMMITTEE,and also shame on COACH for not have freedom of speach, it happened to other player like messi etc
great that nigeria is doing well in there mode of playing, big shame to marselle by not wishing nigeria a good fortune, the french indirect rule in all contries they colonies is still on them, and i will never wish marselle good they will never concile any mejor leage againg and i wish they goes down to devision two or to there regional leage, secondly nigeria national coach should be the most stupid boy, he nows what happened to messi in barca and so many other player, we need everything to win the olypic my dear, leane to speak for you right, freedom of speash is not a harme (SHAME ON OLYPIC COMMITEE, SHAME ON FIFA,,SHAME ON NFA,and SHAME ON NIG COACH,
Shocked on olympic marselle's behavoir.Even as their name sounds, they should have known the importance of the name "olympic"to any country.if nigeria fails to grab a medal they should be held responsible.------ from chike.
Taiwo is a great footballer but if Marselle will have the power to deny him a place playing for his beloved Nation Nigeria in The Olympics, Marselle will never have the power to stop Gods wish or miracles for our Eagle Boys in China so What will be must be no matter what.
he shud b aloud 2 go nd represent is country....caz nigeria iz d best.9ja 4 lyf.good luck.
i dont see why marselle couldn't released taiwo
marselle is a very stupid club wat is d reason for keeping taiwo they re just trying to slim down the cahnces of a black nation winnig the olympics butit won't work coz nigeria will go all the way to the final
The big question is that were Taiye Taiwo to be French and France needed him to play for them at the Olympics, would Marseilles have refused to release him? I am sure they would not have thought of it. Playing at the Olympics would not only have enhanced the player's valuation, but it would also have improved the clubs' estimation. Such is the club that their supporters are wasting their time by trying to raise money to buy Drogba. It shows how insensitive they could be when it comes to issues of national importance to their players. You just lost an opportunity to have an Olympics gold medallist play for the club.
Scolari & AC millan knows the importance of National call and they allowed Kalou & ronaldino to represent their respective nations shame on Marselle Leave Taiwo Leave
Taiwo move on from Marselle to a better club, Despite the Fact that Barca won an appeal on Messi they still allowed him to future for Argentina which made a difference, we in Africa do know that french are the worst colony in history and so are their clubs slave trading is a very common phenomenon. Taiwo move to England where the rights of players are better protected
common nigeriam win i want you to be japan and usa and also win the quarter final, semi-final and the final of the olympic gold medal.
shame on Marselle as wellas to the FIFA for not giving chance to a youngster like Taye
to join his fellow sters to fight for medal for his country.shame on europe clubs for using our african players as your working tools.HASSAN
Why did Marseille release him to play qualifiers only for them to turn around and refuse him the chance to play in the Olympics proper ? Do we say they are I****s or just plain R*****s ! Come to think of it, did the French qualify for Mens Football at this Olympics ? One wonders... Shame on FIFA, Shame one MARSEILLE ! Shame on NF(F), as usual, Clueless A****s !!!
of course marselle shld bow their head down in shame for not doing what is right. when they have an English, Italian or a Brazilian player in their team they should do same. I bet you FIFA would come fighting like a wounded lion to get the right thing done. Shame on FIFA as well for failing to re enforce their own rules governing the game. SELASI.
Ronaldo was accused of wanting to leave man united for money. Taiwo is not being released to play for his country for honour. Clubs have always been disloyal to players who they use and dump. Players should look after themselves and take the best deal they can get in terms of money, respect and a future. Thumbs down to olympique marseille
bad precedence from the clubs and the court. One wonders if Marselle can refuse a French national to play for his country.
