American rider Tom Danielson won the 15km time trial in Ribera del Duero to take the overall lead of the Tour de Burgos.
Garmin rider Danielson clocked 17 minutes nine seconds on the stage, putting him 10 seconds clear of team-mate and compatriot Danny Pate.
Katusha's Alexei Markov was third while Spain's Alejandro Valverde came in fourth.
It was Danielson's first individual win since 2006. He now leads the overall standings by four seconds from Pate and five seconds from Valverde.
The five-day race ends on Sunday with a 155-kilometre mountain finish at Lagunas de Neila.
