Premier League - Round-up: Villa beat Fiorentina

Eurosport - Sat, 08 Aug 22:53:00 2009

Aston Villa's pre-season preparations concluded on a high note with a 1-0 victory over Serie A side Fiorentina at Villa Park.

Ashley Young, Aston Villa - 0

Villa boss Martin O'Neill handed a debut to new £6 million signing Fabian Delph but it was experienced campaigner Emile Heskey who hit winner for the hosts after 14 minutes, the striker reacting quickest to Ashley Young's (pictured) cross to prod home at the near post.

Fiorentina spurned a great chance to pull level with 15 minutes remaining when Curtis Davies handled in the area, Alberto Gilardino crashing the resulting penalty against the upright.

A late goal from Fabio Quagliarella condemned West Ham to a 1-0 defeat in their Bobby Moore Cup clash against Napoli.

A keenly contested encounter at Upton Park ultimately went the way of the Italians after Quagliarella looped home a superb flicked header over Hammers goalkeeper Robert Green after 78 minutes.

The visitors were on the back foot moments later, however, when Manuele Blasi was sent off for a second yellow card just 26 minutes after entering the fray as a substitute.

The hosts pushed for an equaliser in the final minutes and came close through Junior Stanislas in stoppage time, but Napoli's 10 men held on for the win.

Blackburn's strikers drew yet another blank in a 2-0 loss at Dundee United.

Rovers missed a host of chances in a goalless stalemate against Hibernian in midweek and again failed to fire as their Scottish Premier League hosts ran out comfortable winners thanks to strikes in each half from Andis Shala and Prince Buaben.

Rovers manager Sam Allardyce freely admits his side could be short of goals in the coming Premier League campaign but of more immediate concern will be the fitness of Chris Samba, Paul Gallagher and Ryan Nelsen, who all picked up knocks.

Burnley lost yet another pre-season match on their tour of Scotland as they fell 2-1 to St Johnstone, with Paul Sheerin's late penalty giving the hosts victory.

Birmingham endured a goalless draw at St Andrews with Sporting Gijon.

In a match of few chances the hosts came closest to scoring when Jose Angel's long-range drive went close, but Garry O'Connor almost pinched a win for the hosts until his shot was blocked.

Bolton also played out a scoreless 90 minutes as they hosted Hibernian in Jussi Jaaskelainen's testimonial match.

The hosts - who put out a full-strength side - created plenty of chances but were unable to break through.

Portsmouth enjoyed a home victory in their final pre-season match against Scottish giants Rangers. New long-term loan signing Frederic Piquionne scored both goals.

Darren Bent celebrated completing his move to Sunderland by finding the net on his debut for the Black Cats in a 1-1 draw with Hearts at Tynecastle.

The hosts took the lead on 31 minutes through David Obua before Bent poached a goal after Phil Bardsley's shot was blocked into his path.

Wigan Athletic triumphed in their final pre-season match at home against St Mirren thanks to goals from Jason Koumas, Hugo Rodallega and Mario Melchiot. Craig Dargo scored for the visitors.

  1. Got to be said, Villa look pretty sharp pre-season. Maybe one or two of last seasons younger players have come of age. If they have, it should be a very interesting few months indeed. No prediction as yet, but with one or two fresh faces pushing hard to play, I feel we might go a step further than last year.
