Sheffield United boss Kevin Blackwell has revealed that midfielder Lee Williamson may require surgery on a back injury.

The 27-year-old is still struggling with the problem that has hampered his pre-season preparations.

The summer signing from Watford will find out on Monday whether or not he requires an operation and Blackwell is not optimistic.

"Lee saw a specialist on Thursday and the full ramifications of his problem will become clear on Monday," Blackwell told the club's official website.

"He has a bulging disc which could force him into an operation - it is disappointing for everyone.

"I think the problem is similar to what Gary Speed has had."
