Three London Olympic venues at risk

Thu 28 Aug, 04:50 PM

LONDON (Reuters) - The future of three controversial London 2012 Olympic venues hangs in the balance after the government ordered a review into their viability and value for money.

Olympics minister Tessa Jowell has called in accountants KPMG to carry out a viability test on the proposed equestrian venue at Greenwich Park, the shooting facilities at the Royal Artillery Barracks, Woolwich and the basketball venue on the main Olympic Park.

The three have been criticized by local groups and sporting bodies over their cost, impact and legacy.

"We have commissioned KPMG to do a report on the equestrian, shooting and basketball venues, looking at whether the Olympic experience and the legacy they will provide represents value for money," Jowell said.

"When you take the costs for these venues, it seems like a lot of money to a lot of people. It is a sort of testing-to-destruction to see whether that spending can be justified."

Jowell said it was "possible but unlikely" the venues could be scrapped after the review, which is expected to take several months.

The government is under pressure to keep costs down after the 2012 budget soared to 9.3 billion pounds.

A spokesman for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport said it was one of a number of ongoing reviews into efficiency.

The three venues in doubt are temporary and will not provide any legacy -- a key plank of London's successful bid to host the Games.

The 23,000-seater stadium in Greenwich Park will be removed after 2012 as will the 7,500-seater facilities at the Royal Artillery Barracks.

The 12,000-seater basketball arena in the Olympic Park, which is to host the qualifying rounds, is set to be relocated after the finals, due to be held at the O2 Dome in Greenwich.

Woolwich is unpopular with the sport's governing body, British Shooting. It prefers a site at Dartford where a permanent international-standard shooting centre could be built.

Local groups have complained that Greenwich, which is part of a World Heritage Site and is London's oldest Royal Park dating back to 1433, is an inappropriate place to host the equestrian event.

The cost of the venues will not be revealed until contracts have been agreed, but they are expected to total tens of millions of pounds.

The Olympic authorities have already had to change certain venues.

Fencing was moved to the ExCel centre, while canoeing and the kayak slalom was moved to Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, after fears over high levels of contamination.

  2. if tessa jowell already admits that the change of venues is unlikely, which translates to 'definately not' in the politcal jagon world. why on earth is she going to pay at least hundreds of thousends of pounds to commission a report from KPMG over the next upcoming months. more jobs for the boys!!! lets keep an eye on the money by spending more!!! by the time the report comes through i'll bet the works on these locations would have already began. i always wonder what qualification do you need to be a politicien, after all during a cabinet re-shuffle the minister for education can become the minister for defence over night. makes you think!!!

  3. Is it only that they worried about, what about the transportation, the great british weather i believe is gonna be a discrace to the world of olympics and im even prepared to put a hugh bet on at MR LADBROOKS, that it will be a discrace not only that you must watch out for you own people the drunks and the racists this is what the rest of the world are saying of the UK staging the 2012 olympics

  4. If moaning was an Olympic sport the British would win all the medals hands down!! Instead of looking at the negative can we not look at the positive and support and be proud of the fact the worlds eyes will be on us in four years time.No wonder the Australians call us winging Poms

  5. To save excess costs why are London insisting on building a new Velodrome when we have a purpose built one in the center of Manchester. This was built for the Commonwealth Games in 2002 and has hosted several National and International competitions, also it is the place where our Gold Medal winning cyclists were all trained prior to the Beijing Olympics. Having traveled inside China on business I know it is far easier and safer for people to travel to Manchester from London than to the many far flung sites that were the venues for the last Olympics

  6. It's good to see you Brits doing what you do best, moan. None of you have any insight to any of the London 2012 plans but you're busy with your doom saying and giving off negative energy.

The Olympics are awarded to a city and that city was London! Were any of the Manchester Commonwealth Games venues located in London or any where else in the country? So why then pray tell should the London Olympics have venues located in Manchester? Had this been proposed in the bid, London would not have won. If you people who know it all knew anything about the Olympics, you would know that one of the factors that help bidding cities score high in their bid evaluations is having most or all venues in close proximity. There have been exceptions such as Equestrian in Hong Kong for the Beijing Games but this was dues to heatlh concerns for the horses and even then there was a big uproar by the sport federation! Sailing and Rowing have to be held where the closest suitable bodies of water are located which in most cities means they are further away from the other venues but that is normal.

Do you people bother to do any research or look at how Olympic Games are awarded and subsequently run before you open your mouths ans say really stupid things? Obviously not! London's biggest challenge will not be the politicians or the budget spiraling out of control. It will be the negative, moaning, unhelpful nature of the general population who just moan and complain about everything. These people who seemingly have nothing constructive to offer, who are not knowledgeable in the subject matter but think they should run off at the mouth anyway and who I seriously doubt are doing anything positive with their lives. If you want to criticise, then criticise intelligently and at least try to make an attempt to sound as if you know what you're talking about.

  7. Oh can you imagine the International unfair advantage furore on using Hickstead? The same goes for Bisley. Holmes Pierrepoint or anywhere else our athletes have used in the past. However, we do have enough reservoirs for the coxless rowers, enough sea for the sailing events, and how about the old indoor track at RAF Cosford being re-vamped, and considering the amount of disused RAF bases around the UK that this Government saw fit to close, why not utilise the old hangers and bring some economy back into the areas affected by closure's. London can host an extra marathon, we don't need a bird's nest stadium for anything. Stafford boasts an indoor olympic sized pool - though we locals really think our council meant to say olympic sized for pygmies, but it's fairly new so the 'dancing water nyphms' will have somewhere to play!

  10. Why are the olympics always about a city- no amount of flash building are going to transform that part of London . If you want to regenerate that area just put transport in and the rest will take care of itself . Its should be about the whole of Britain and we should have events all over the country and EVERYONE should pay - isnt that the concept - playing on the diversity of Britain ? Why build all these new buildings when they exist already in other places - this is Kens fault - I was born and bred in London but I do know life does exist outside the M25 and they are more likely to get a warmer reception that down here. Re the stadium - why build it at all ? if the majority of people around the world watch it on the TV CGI can do a far better job at half the price - way to go china !

  13. there are plenty of venues around that can be used why spend all these billions for the Olympics. building arenas that will be pulled down after the games has finished what a complete waste of public money give more funding to help those who are going to try and make us proud to be British by competing in these games

  14. This is all too little too late as usual. We are a nation that is reactive and not proactive. We spend too much time arguing about where and when and by whom. We can't make the simplest of decisions. Whats wrong with the commonwealth games venues in Manchester, they are built and more or less paid for. I DO HOPE THE GOVERNMENT GETS IT'S HEAD OUT OF IT'S @#$%

From Bob, on Thu 28 Aug 9:34PM
  15. There is no way these games will stay on budget i am sure the private firms involved in the building of these venues will make sure of that and the government will be only too happy to hand over our money to pay for it! Why can't we use some of the excellent venues that already exist around the British Isles to host the games? People outside of London will not benefit from those facilities that are left standing after the event (nor i imagine will many Londoners) give more people around the country the chance to share in the games after all aren't we all paying for it? 18. We still have the best Cycling Stadium in the country, A great Aquatics center and I am sure we could find a few other venues in Manchester. We could let London rent them for a couple of weeks I am sure we would not cost that much.

  19. We have the opportunity to host the most prestigious games and all I seem to hear is negative comments from those who should be promoting it. For goodness sake pull together and forget the cost. Lets give lottery funding to everyone who may have a chance at 2012. Lord Coe and his team have done a splendid job getting the games to London so let us show our appreciation by supporting him and not being so negative about costing and venues

From SUSAN M, on Thu 28 Aug 9:00PM
  20. It doesn't matter where they stage the events, the average man on the street isn't going to be able to get in to see anything. Corporate Hospitality and Ticket Touts will see to that. And if you're thinking about turning up somewhere to watch it on a big screen, better check with Health and Safety first. After all, they wouldn't want someone falling over and grazing their knee. Corporate Hospitality and Health & Safety. Two institutions GUARANTEED to ruin "OUR" Olympics.
