Premier League - Billionaire denies Newcastle bid

Eurosport - Mon, 08 Sep 14:14:00 2008

Billionaire businessman Anil Ambani has denied that he has launched a takeover bid for Newcastle United.

FOOTBALL Newcastle fans protest - 0

Ambani, estimated to be the sixth richest person in the world, has long been linked with a bid for the troubled Tyneside club.

The Indian, apparently a Newcastle fan, was reportedly ready to make his move after the club plunged into further turmoil under Mike Ashley's reign following Kevin Keegan's decision to quit the club last week.

However, Ambani's official spokesman has denied that talks are ongoing with Ashley about purchasing the club.

"We have denied this earlier and we have no plans to take over Newcastle United or any other English club," head of Corporate Communications for Ambani's parent group Reliance, Gaurav Wahi, told the Journal.

"All these media reports are inaccurate.

"Our position is that nothing has changed and we have been wondering why these stories keep surfacing in England.

"We have not expressed interest in Newcastle. There is nothing in the latest stories. It's a non-starter."

A source close to DIC - the investment arm of the Dubai Government who tried to buy Liverpool - has also told the Journal that they have no interest in Newcastle.

  3. A lot of anger and hatred toweards Ashley. Rightfully so maybe. The point is he's spent the money to get rid of Fat Fred whom we disliked then and seem to have forgotten now. Don't get me wrong. Do I wish he'd sell and leave? Yes. Can he save himself still, maybe. the fault is not with hima s a person, but with the structure he has put in place. I don't think people fault him as a person/owner and if they do they shouldn't. Yes man City splurged adn bought Robinho, Ashley should spend in a manner that he can (a) afford and (b) believes is prudent for the business that is NUFC, sustainability being the key word. So I don't fault him for not buying berbatov, robinho or any other player that we as fans wish for. What i do fault him is for putting in a strucutre or should say people that are not sustainable and for the benefit of the club. Okay so you have a director of football, fine then he should sit below the manager of the club or at the least as an equal to the manager, who should have the final say on the 1st team and reserves. The Director should aim to buy or bring in talent that the manager can work with and wants to work with. The Director may have more say on the youth squad and the resources of the club such as training ground, facilities etc the shceduling, whom we play in off season etc. Re Denis Wise, he fails the first test of suitability. An unproven manager and definetely an overated player. If Mike Ashley wants to prove his faith to the loyals, then he should hire capable staff and not mates.

  5. Its a shame that the people of newcastle were and continue to be blinded by silly ,arrogant little man like kevin keegan . At best an enthusiatic also ran , he really didn,t ever manage , throughout his footblling life he has been a tryer , but also a proven quitter when things don,t go his way really , come on ,this was so on the cards that it would turn out like this ! That said , this whole affair is a lesson to us not only in footballing terms , but in any terms you care to think about that we only have ourselves to blame for thethings we complain about!! . we are a nation of lemmings who WILL turn up on saturday at st james Park , who continue to buy petrol , who continue to pay for satelite tv , who perpetuate all the evils in life by our willingness to go along with things , when all the time the power is in the hands of us all to boycott all the things we disagree with , But we don,t , we are so so weak willed it hurts , How amazingly GREAT it would be to see empty terraces on saturday !! just HOW LONG could the club , or any club who upset its supporters , go without drastic adction to make the paying public come back . We should all be ashamed of ourselves for encouraging greedy undeserving business men to reap their ill gotten rewards , and those paying to be at st james Park on saturday who had anything untoward to say about Ashley or Wise SHAME ON YOU ! You are weak willed lemmings!!

  12. As a football fan who has no bias towards any club i would just like to say how dismated i am with English football.West Ham and Newcastle are two great traditional English clubs who have been run by people that cant manage a team.I'm afraid our national game is being ruined by investors with no interest for the club or its fans. Those who knock West Ham and the Toon beware what lies around the corner its pulling our national game to pieces.

  15. I cant believe this.

    Football is now dead.

It was dying for a while.

The big four will be a new big four, but still a big four.

FIFA need to implement a salary cap. This is the only way that the premier league will be more even. It needs to be done by FIFA though, because footballers (or their agents) will go to the biggest wage, be it in England, Spain or Italy, so it needs to be a world wide rule.
I certainly dont want to watch Premier League clubs dominating the semi finals of the Champions League, year in year out, because that would simply be boring, just as the premier league is now.

  16. Chris O, you may have a valid point. All we hear are the allegations and accusations being thrown left and right, and the disputes between the manager and the board. The fans are angry, and rightfully so, but what we will never know are the dealings and financial numbers that are not the privy of fans and football managers. If Ashley spent millions for the club then he has every right to see that he gets his desired returns. Football is a sport but it is also a business and you make investment decision based on returns, risks, etc, and not on passion and love for club alone.

  18. Ashley will not sell because no one is interested. He would have to sell it cheap and loose money and he won't do that. I believe he will make some acrobatic moves to make Toon fans believe he actually cares and then he will do what he wanted to do in a more subtle way.

  20. It's bad news when you see great clubs like Newcastle struggling, being a Man City fan we know what it's like but you never know what's around the corner, reports are saying that a multi-billionaire (similar to City) maybe interested in a take-over at Newcastle although this has been totally denied, hmmmm, we'll see on that one, hope he does take over and then Newcastle can throw a spanner in the works just like City have, the days of the "Big Four" seem to be coming to an end (thankfully).

Just like to add Newcastle have a great set of fans and love their football it was a great shame KK left because truthfully speaking Manchester City would not be in this position only for him, he did a fanatstic job for us, we owe him big time, hope he gets another managers job because the game needs people like KK, even if City (at the time) and Newcastle owners think otherwise, he's a top bloke.
