Bulgaria conceded a goal every 44 seconds in the Latvian town of Liepaja. They trailed 7-0 after five minutes, 19-0 after ten and 31-0 after one period.

In their previous matches, they had lost 30-1 to Croatia and 41-0 to Italy.

Bulgaria has a population of 7.4 million but only three indoor ice rinks and 37 registered female players.

SOME OF THE BIGGEST DEFEATS IN SPORTING HISTORY:

Football: Bon Accord suffered the worst defeat in any British senior match, losing 36-0 to Arbroath on September 12, 1885 in a first round match of the Scottish Cup. Thirteen goals were scored by centre-forward John Petrie.

Football: The highest international football scoreline is Australia's 31-0 win over American Samoa in 2001 with a record 13 goals for Aussie striker Archie Thompson.

Cricket: England beat Australia by an innings and 579 runs at The Oval in August 1938. The home side posted an innings of 903-7 declared before a Bradman-less Australia were all out for 201 and just 123.

Rugby Union: Australia scored 22 tries in their game versus Namibia at the 2003 World Cup, winning 142-0.

American Football: The record score is the 220-0 pasting given to college side Cumberland by Georgia Tech in 1916.

Baseball: Japanese high school Kawamoto Technical School side forfeited a game versus Shusukan when trailing 66-0 after just two innings.

  1. What about Eddie 'The Eagle' and his exploits for English Ski Jumping in those Olympic Games some years ago? A German ski jumper claimed that he should never have been allowed to take part. All things considered, Eddie ought to have been the only one that was allowd to take part. He was the only true amateur to participate I feel sure.

  2. Actually, Cumberland lost 222-0 to Georgia Tech but hey, when you have a score that high, you might be forgiven for having lost count somewhere...

  3. Micheal S well said nothing is as bad as the England football team, just think what better facilities and support our atheletes would have had if they had diverted all the money they get paid into supporting them, its the likes of Chris Hoy and co who desrve good wages at least they are making us a proud nation on the sporting stage.

  4. 82-0 is a pretty good score. However, in a under-18 tournament in 1998 South Korea beat up on Thailand 92-0. Of course, the fact Thailand even has an ice hockey team is even more shocking than the score.

I wonder how Canada would do against Bulgaria?

  5. Are people here insane? They lost 82-0!!! I don't care how amateurish they are, if you're going to represent your country you really should practice a lot more beforehand. I would never agree to represent my country in baseball (considering that I never held a baseball bat in my life), I would respectfully decline and say my country deserved to be represented much better than I ever could.

I swear, the way some people around here write, I'm starting to think that if they have lost 150-0 people would say they should have statues built in their homage.

  6. How can they possibly be as bad as the English national football team who, despite being paid MILLIONS, were drawing 0-0 with Andorra at half-time in their World Cup qualifier. I mean that's got to be much worse, comparatively, than the Bulgarian side, surely.

  8. At least they turned up and had a go. I once tried ice hockey (having formerly been a county grass hockey player) and could not walk for 3 days afterwards, even though there were only 6 of us having a bit of fun on the ice. One of them, however, was a former college player from Canada (Jilles Gallichand - he retired after someone took his teeth out with their stick thrust into his mouth!!! Ouch)

  10. I am in total agreement with Geoff Gable. These women deserve better than some of the derisive being levelled at them at least they had the guts to participate and judging by the limited facilities they have to work with and the limited number of registered players to choose from. They did well, I also noticed there was no mention of the faxcilities or player pool of their opponents. Maybe that should be mentioned in future articles just to level the playing field or rink . As for the dissenters if they're so good why dont they go out and do better instead of sitting at their computers ridiculing these brave women. To the team ,"Dont lose heart ladies I for one am proud of you as I'm sure many others are. From an Offshore Jock

  12. oh well if criminals get convicted for crimes they committed then and people get ban from driving for drinking whilst on the wheels then this shameful ice hockey nation and the whole management including players should be convicted for bringing the game into disrepute its either a gambling move or they are not good to represent any club talkless a country and all their names should be in the hall of fame and they should be hounded so they know that playing for their country is a pride not a joke

    UK - Slovenia : 5-1
    UK - Austria : 4-3 after extratime

  19. The Bulgarian team's participation in this event restores one's faith in the Olympic ideal.

In these days of money-grabbing professional athletes in a competition which was originally intended to be for amateur performers who were more concerned with taking part than being involved in the desperate win-at-all-costs attitude so prevalent today, it makes a refreshing change to discover that there are still genuine sports lovers for whom simply to compete is the aim.

To the Bulgarian Women's Ice Hockey Team: Ladies, I salute you.

  20. Well Bulgaria lost 82-0 womens Ice hockey. Just imagine My country Malta, they would be thrashed at least 164-0 meaning it to be the VEREY WORST Ice Hockey team in the WHOLE World !

Yes I admit its a very high score to lose by but Malta will be much worse I am pretty sure at that.
