Ferrari poised for Santander deal

Eurosport - Tue, 08 Sep 18:46:00 2009

Formula One champions Ferrari are expected to announce Santander as new sponsors after scheduling a news conference with the Spanish bank at the Italian Grand Prix.

Ferrari said their president Luca di Montezemolo and Santander chairman Emilio Botin would both attend the conference at the Monza circuit.

Spain's largest bank have backed McLaren since 2007, when Spain's double world champion Fernando Alonso was with the Mercedes-powered team.

Alonso left McLaren after just one difficult season alongside current champion Lewis Hamilton, returning to Renault for 2008 and 2009, and his imminent move to Ferrari has long been taken for granted in Formula One circles.

  1. janzeeb London is the financial centre of Europe. For example over 60% of all the Forex transactions that take place in the World (not just Euope) are done in London.

London's Stock Exchange dwarfs Frankfurt's or Paris.

Perhaps you should gain a bit of knowledge before you spout off.

  3. I know there is a rececsion on but Great Britain, is filled with international banks, I sure they would get spondorship from them. I will be closing my Abbey bank account if they withdraw from McLaren. Why did this lowlife Gordon Brown allow our bank to be buy up by Spain? We need our banks, we are the financially centre of Europe.

Well after a great holiday, and come back here to read the posts, and say to myself they know not what they preach.
@18 the grief Alonso caused at mccheat, you talk in riddles, dont you mean the grief Alonso suffered at mccheat.
@22, Mercedes Benz withdraw their engines and have someone else's engine in the back of their car?.
    I ask whose engines?
You are behind with your info.

  8. F1police: I don't understand your reasoning. Why would Mercedes Benz who OWN (not sponsor) 40% of McLaren withdraw their engines and have someone else's engine in the back of their car?.
Racingshed: Ferrari may not need the Santander money but they will take it just to annoy McLaren. Don't underestimate just how much these two teams hate each other.
And Williams will have a Renault engine in the back next season( the most successfil partnership in the history of F1) if Renault don't do a 'Honda' and withdraw altogether.

Ferrari looks to be re shaping and rebuilding its team once again to the dominate team it once had under the leadership of Schumacher who is hoping to repeat the success they had under ther leadership of Ross Brawn. Santander joining Ferrari with Alonso is going to be heavenly to the Ferrari fans, especially since has been stripped from McLaren's sponsorship boards. This move is going to be perfect for all British fans, everyone hates Ferrari, and everyone hates Alonso. What is left for McLaren, Mercedes Benz also swapping sponsorship from McLaren to Brawn, and if that is the case, will McLaren retain the Mercedes Benz engine, or will they go for Renault engines instead. This may turn out not to be the case but this is possible, remember Williams and BMW.

  10. Santander might not be so happy if Ratty gets caught up in the Piquet 'deliberately' crashing roumers. Also it seems that he will have to contend with either MS, Kimi or Massa as a team mate, none of whom will give him an inch. Expect to see more embarrassing toys out of the pram incidents.

From Biggles, on Wed 9 Sep 11:18AM
  11. Surely this is all irrelevant, if Alonso does end up at Ferrari he will strop off when he gets beat by Massa, he'll be claiming he's treated as a 2nd driver. After the grief he caused McLaren i really can't see why Ferrari would want him in their car and lets face it, its got nothing to do with big name sponsors, this is one thing Ferrari are not struggling for.

HELLO MY LITTLE F1 BUNNIES AREN'T WE VERY CONFUSED LITTLE F1 BUNNIES WE ARE. ALONSO DRIVING FOR FERRARI NEXT YEAR IS NOT NEW NEWS, THIS HAS BEENING GOING AROUND SINCE ALONSO LEFT MCLAREN BEFORE THE END OF 2007, ALONSO ONLY RETURNED TO RENUALT TO SERVE HIM AS A BRIDGE TO FERRARI. SANTANDER ONLY REMAINED WITH MCLAREN BECAUSE THEY WERE UNDER CONTRACT WITH MCLAREN, AND MCLAREN WOULDN'T ALLOW A GOOD SPONSOR TO LEAVE WITHOUT FOREFILLING THE CONTRACT THAT WAS IN PLACE. WITH SANTANDER DEPARTING AND MERCEDES BENZ LOOKING TO SPONSOR BRAWN, MCLAREN COULD BE UNDER FUNDED, IF VODAFONE WITHDRAWS FROM MCLAREN, AND BY THE WAY REJOINS FERRARI, MCLAREN ARE GOING TO BE FACING THE SAME PROBLEMS WILLIAMS HAS BE FACING, VERY LITTLE MONEY.

ELLIE YOU ARE A VERY STUPID BUNNY, SANTANDER KNOW EXACTLY WHY ALONSO LEFT MCLAREN AND THEY THEMSELVES WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN PLEASED. ALONSO WAS NOT PLEASED THAT, AND THAT NICE MR RON DENNIS FAVOURED MR HAMILTON'S SON, AND ALONSO BECAME THE NUMBER TWO DRIVER. ISN'T MR HAMILTON'S SON SUCH A NICE YOUNG MAN, WE ARE ALL VERY PROUD OF HIM IN CHILE. AND WHAT RIGHT DID ALONSO HAVE IN EXPECTING EQUAL TREATMENT, JUST BECAUSE HE BROUGHT THE NUMBER ONE AND TWO TO MCLAREN AS WELL AS THE VODAFONE MONEY AND SPAINISH SPONSORS WHO CAME ON BOARD OR CONTINUED THEIR SPONSORSHIP BECAUSE OF HIM, WHO DOES ALONSO THINK HE IS..................................................... .....

Guess who will be driving for Ferrari next year? That's right the WDC for the next several years. Can't wait for FA to join the prancing horse. They will dominate as Schmi. did for the next 10 years. My guess is at least 5 WDC.

Spain's largest bank have backed McLaren since 2007, when Spain's double world champion Fernando Alonso was with the Mercedes-powered team.
