US Open - Men: Nadal, Del Potro into last 16

Eurosport - Tue, 08 Sep 05:22:00 2009

Rafael Nadal battled through the pain barrier to beat fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro 7-5 6-4 6-4 and reach the fourth round of the US Open.

Rafael Nadal, of Spain, serves to Nicolas Almagro, also of Spain, during the third round of the US Open in New York - 0

The Spaniard, who was sidelined for with tendinitis in both knees during June and July, suffered another setback on a Arthur Ashe Stadium when he received treatment for what television commentators said was "a right abdominal muscle injury he first suffered in Cincinnati".

At 2-1 down in the third set, Nadal lay flat on his back as one of the tournament medics sprayed and taped his stomach.

After resuming play, the third seed grimaced on several occasions as he poked the afflicted area between points.

Despite the injury, Nadal hung on to beat his childhood friend Almagro, sealing the match with a scorching backhand to end an entertaining 15-shot rally.

Nadal, whose best US Open run came with last year's semi-final showing, will play for a quarter-final berth against French 13th seed Gael Monfils, who was ahead 6-3 6-4 1-0 when Argentina's Jose Acasuso retired with left knee pain.

A sore right knee also forced French ninth seed Gilles Simon to retire from his third-round match against Juan Carlos Ferrero , the 24th-seeded Spaniard leading 1-6 6-4 7-6 (5) 1-0 when Simon called it quits.

Simon had a trainer treat his knee when 5-4 down in the third set, then limped through the tie-break loss before stopping after being broken to open the fourth set.

Ferrero, the 2003 French Open champion and 2003 US Open runner-up who won his first title since 2003 at Casablanca in April, will face Argentine sixth seed Juan Martin del Potro for a last-eight berth.

Del Potro was put through a good work out by Daniel Koellerer of Austria, whose passionate demeanour and feisty attitude won him vocal support from the New York crowd.

The Argentine raced through the opening set but was pegged back by his opponent in the second, but the South American's consistency and accuracy returned as he kept one step ahead thereafter to record a 6-1 3-6 6-3 6-3 victory.

No Frenchman has won a Grand Slam singles crown since Yannick Noah at the 1983 French Open, but seventh seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, last year's Australian Open runner-up, and Monfils are still in the hunt to end the drought.

Tsonga ousted compatriot Julien Benneteau 7-6(4) 6-2 6-4 to book a date with French Open semi-finalist and 2007 Australian Open runner-up Fernando Gonzalez. The Chilean 11th seed beat Czech Tomas Berdych 7-5 6-4 6-4.

Croatia's Marin Cilic blasted Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin off the court, winning 6-1 6-4 6-3 to secure a fourth-round tie with Andy Murray.

  1. good point dion.legge .... i agree with u...lets wait for 7-8 more years :-)

  2. @25 ritesh s and @16 anthony, I think you are having this discussion prematurely. You should both get together when are both retired, have a cigar and brandy and then compare the stats. No sense doing it now, too much tennis left for both of them.

However, I agree with ritesh in that Nadal can be compared with Federer because he is the only person to challenge and beat him consistently.

Initially, I wasn't a fan of Rafa, but he has grown on me. Would be nice to see the both of them in the US open final.

    Cheers all,

    From dion.legge, on Mon 7 Sep 4:15PM
  3. Anthony's comments are only based one sided. Why don't you also mention:
1.R Nadal was the only man who beat RF 6 times in Grand Slams
    2. Nadal was the only man who won 5 of his 6 career slams by beating RF in the finals.
    3. The only man who has achieved 6 slams and a gold medal at an age of 22.
    4. FYI nadal dint just win a couple of matches against RF (stats are 13/7. so better check ur records)
and I also can put no. of points here. Now ur argument wud be RF won 15 and nadal 6.
He is just 23 and plenty of tennis is left for him. I've openly admitted several times and wudn't hesitate to say again that RF is the best tennis player ever till now but when u say nadal can't be compared with him is absolute senseless. Ofcourse and without any doubt he can be compared with RF.

  4. RF, true, has won endless Slams but not a Grand slam which means winning all 4 in 1 year. I think the last persons to do so were Rod Laver and Steffi Graff.I'm not sure about Navratilova.
Today, in my mind the 2 best players playing are DelPo and Andy Murray not RF or Rafa.
Isn't it interesting how we have a change of guard in the girlies? Ivanovic, Jankovic
and Safina are gone. Now we have Serena, Kim and Flavia.

  7. Nadal and fed are both class players and true champs. They have different playing styles anthony so its not easy to compare and nadal has won more than a couple of games against roger.

  12. Who are these people that kept comparing Federer and nadal? It makes me sick. Becos Nadal won a cpuple of games aginst Federer which in most case he plated with all his life and that is wot he's sufering today.Mind you Nadal gave Federer the 2006 & 2007 wembledon maybe you people seem to forget but lets checkout this records of Federer:
    * Is the only man to win five consecutive titles at two different Grand Slams - Wimbledon and US Open.
    * Is the first man to win Wimbledon-US Open double four years in a row.
    * Is the only man in the professional era to win three consecutive majors twice in his career when he captured the 2007 Australian Open title.
    * Has a professional era record of 65 consecutive wins on grass, which was finally snapped by Nadal in the 2008 Wimbledon final.
*Holds a record run of 24 consecutive final victories, which was snapped when he loses 2005 Masters Cup final to David Nalbandian. Finished the season with an 81-4 win-loss record
*the only man to the keep the ATP top ranking for a record 237 consecutive weeks ie 4yrs
    And finally:
Federer has appeared in an unprecedented 20 career Grand Slam finals, and as of July 2009, has reached the semi-finals or better of the last 21 Grand Slam tournaments, a streak spanning over five years and more than doubling the previous record.[12] Federer also holds the record of reaching 10 consecutive Grand Slam finals and has appeared in 16 of the last 17. As a result of his successes in tennis, Federer was named the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year for four consecutive years (2005–2008).[13.
I mean how can you start to compare Federer and nadal. Nadal as i see it can never win 5 consecutive wembledon/US Open in his life. His is a good player though but not in Federers classs

From anthony, on Mon 7 Sep 7:31AM
  13. Keep on Swinging and.....Winning Rafa. Congrats!
Good luck to your next game against Monfils!
    Vamos EL MATADOR!

  14. To No 7 A Sh it G dumb moron who thinks that nadal faked his injury:
Nadal revealed his injury after RG and before the start of Wimby. What u say if it's true even then he cud have participated at wimby 09 and wud have continued with his excuses had he been beaten there just like you people said before the start of the tournament. But he didn't, cause he was low in his confidence due to his injury and dint want to jeopardize his career. As simple as that...but i know it's a rocket science for u...(copy pasted my post from the other thread like u did).....rafa's biggest mistake was that he played 5 master series between jan oz 09 and may FO. He cud have played only one (Rome or Barcelona) to make sure he's in touch with clay court tennis and shud have taken care of his knees for the rest of the months. And what a f*cking liar when he says "I HAVE A LOT OF RESPECT FOR NADAL"

From ritesh s, on Mon 7 Sep 3:18AM
  15. Hey Ashit,
Its really sad that people like you give sports a bad name. I dont know why people attack Nadal or any other player of his calibre with useless remarks. Commn guys treat him with respect. I dont think there are many players who has won 6 or more GS. Injuries is a part of every player, I got to see the same kind of remarks when Roger federer was down with back injury. These player really love to play tennins and i am sure every single player would love to. Coming ut of injury Nadal has reached QF of every single tournament and I think its a big achievement in itself as Roger and Murray said in their statement. Remember what Murray said :its player like Nadal who raised the standard of this game". After playing Nadal he went to Florida and did intense training to come to the level of Nadal and he is not ashamed of saying that. Great players never take back seat. Nadal played with pain in his knees for more than a year,if you follw tennis you would know it well. He is still 5 years younger than Federer and trust me there is a lot more to come from this Spaniard. Federer doesent have Olympic gold and Nadal does not have US open and I am sure both these players would get it anyway though it will be a little tough for Federer as he has to wait for more years. None of the players want to make an excuse, not a players like Nadal who has the best stats against any player (eg Nadal Vs Federer 13/7).

I wish all the best to all the players. Hope to see some great tennis in future

    From dinesh.chhetry, on Mon 7 Sep 12:40AM
  16. Keep going Nadal, you will win x

    From opera.aria, on Mon 7 Sep 12:20AM
  17. No.7 Ashit G seeing as you have cut and pasted your post from another thread I will repeat my reply to it more or less word for word (can't be bothered to look for it)...I believe Rogers mysterious 'mono' was only brought up after his defeat to Djokovic in the Oz Open last year and not before the match or indeed any of the matches he played in that tournament. Strange that isnt it? So to say the same about Nadal is slightly hypocritical is it not?

From Jude, on Mon 7 Sep 12:11AM
  18. Nadal looked a shadow of himself from the start. I don't know if the injury was hampering him before the game...In any case, he doesn't have a chance whatsoever of winning in this condition. It's not being pessimistic, it's being realistic...

From YiannisP, on Sun 6 Sep 11:04PM
  19. Rafa you are still a star! There an awful lot of pessimists on this planet, but you will prevail!

From CARLA, on Sun 6 Sep 10:49PM
  20. i thought it was a brilliant match!! i was kinda suprised when i saw Nadal on the floor, having his abdominal checked. but i bet the audience who were the closest loved every minute of it when he took his shirt off!!
