US Open - Women: Oudin's dream run continues

Eurosport - Tue, 08 Sep 18:18:00 2009

American teenager Melanie Oudin's spectacular run at the US Open gathered momentum when she beat Russian 13th seed Nadia Petrova 1-6 7-6(2) 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals.

TENNIS Melanie Oudin of the US celebrates her win over Nadia Petrova of Russia during their match at the US Open - 0

The 17-year-old has captured the imagination of the public by rolling over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, fourth seed Elena Dementieva and 2006 champion Maria Sharapova.

On day eight of the hardcourt major, Oudin again whipped up the packed Arthur Ashe Stadium into a frenzy when she fought back from a set down to toss Petrova on to the Flushing Meadows scrapheap.

Backed by 23,000 screaming fans, Oudin sealed victory by belting a forehand winner on her third match point.

She will next face Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki, who ended Russian interest in either singles event as she upset former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova 2-6 7-6(5) 7-6(3).

Wozniacki served for the match at 5-3 in the third set but eventually won the deciding tiebreak to reach her first Grand Slam quarter-final after two hours, 23 minutes.

Kuznetsova's demise marked the first time since Wimbledon 2000 that no Russian has made it through to the last eight of a Grand Slam singles event.

The French Open champion overpowered Wozniacki in the first set before the Dane battled back to level the contest. The Russian saved two match points before the duo headed into the tiebreak, which Wozniacki won 7-3 to set up a clash with Oudin.

Kateryna Bondarenko avenged family honour and advanced to the last eight by destroying Argentina's Gisela Dulko 6-0 6-0.

The 52nd-ranked Ukrainian, who had never previously been past the third round of a Grand Slam, took just 47 minutes to rout the 40th-ranked South American who had eliminated her older sister Alona 6-4 6-0 in the second round on the Flushing Meadows hardcourts.

Bondarenko, who is coached by her parents, will seek a semi-final berth against Belgium's 50th-rated Yanina Wickmayer who beat 72nd-ranked Czech teen Petra Kvitova 4-6 6-4 7-5 in a see-saw match.

With Safina and fifth seed Jelena Jankovic eliminated from their upset-filled quarter of the draw, at least one unlikely player will emerge for a fairy-tale trip into the last four.

Bondarenko, who saved a match point in her first match before defeating Serbian 11th seed Ana Ivanovic, made her case for the storybook spot by ripping Dulko, who had been the top-rated woman remaining in their quarter.

The Ukrainian romped through the first set in 22 minutes, winning eight-of-nine points on Dulko's second serve and taking advantage of 11 unforced errors.

The second set was just as lopsided. Bondarenko roared to a 4-0 lead, saved a break point in the fifth game with a backhand volley winner on the way to holding and broke to finish the rout.

Bondarenko, 23, won her only tour career title in Birmingham last year and became the first player from her homeland in the last eight of a Slam.

  1. i see kim going all the way to winning this yr us open if and only if she gets pass serena in the semi's that would be are greatest test yet in the comp. its going to be hard to do a double over the william sisters in one tournament though kim is playing pretty well with some very nice forehand and playing without pressure knowing fully aware that justin is out of the frame though there re rumors of her coming back, but you have to give clijsters some credit having been away from the game for so long and yet playing like it never happened.
she is the only player left in the women draw in my own opinion that is showing the prospect of taking/knocking out the defending champion serena william out of the us open not even oudin with all due respect and credit to her giant killing runs(but they are all russians though taking nothing away from her)
if she comes out victorious over serena in one piece.........i don't have to tell u whats next ........

  4. i like kim and her style but i begin to wonder why she has 34 titles and only one grand slam to her name, i know she was away for 2years but shes 26 and i think with her brilliant play she could be placed with under achievers in terms of grand slams, take demetieva she plays so well and is at her peak now and she is 27 so things are not looking up for her in terms of a grand slam and the youngsters are catching up also, jelena j is headed the same way and so is flavia pennetta and vera,im not even going to mention ana ivanovic. these women are good tennis players, i mean demetievas strokes are so powerful and clean but the GRAND SLAMS are jus not coming, they are making a living and are in the top 10 but the glory which they all seek is the grand slams and its just not happening. if pennetta and clijsters dont win this year i fear they might have lost their chance, by next year this time clijsters will be tired like everyone else from playing more matches and she wont be as fresh as she is now plus she will be a year older and lets not forget the youngsters. so good luck to them, at least serena and venus have tested the sweet glory, i love serena and pennetta and im going to be torn in the match but deep down i want pennetta to get one slam coz serena has 11 already.

  5. If Melanie loses next match, she would have made a history of her own. Imagine 3 top Russians being nocked out by a young unseeded girl! Go Melanie go!!!!!

  10. How refreshing to have an exciting new face come through, about time, makes the game more interesting. All this nonsense about Oudin having a poor game and these theatrics, wake up you fools, she's improving and learning as she goes along. No player has ever stepped onto the court at 17 with a complete and untouchable game. Give her a break!! Go Melanie

  11. I recall Bobito that Natasha simply didn't have the game to be a good singles player, rather than because she was a finalist at seventeen. She went on to become a multi grand slam winner in doubles and mixed,

I have different prediction: Melanie will be a new name for Serena's pain in spite of fair comments by Bobito (24)

From alexeimakhrov, on Tue 8 Sep 12:55PM
  13. aaditya it is rather unfair to refer to melanie's conduct as cheap on court theatrics. Oh please the girl is only seventeen and was having a fairytale performance. That is not in any way 'on court theatrics' in my book. I am hoping she will celebrate her eighteenth birthday on Arthur Ashe as a finalist, even if winning could possibly be beyond her, although you never can tell with a fairytale story. I wonder if all the legion of serena haters out there remember serena being very generous to a seventeen year old maria sharapova and handing her wimbledon 'on a plate'???

    From sanchez.santos, on Tue 8 Sep 12:27PM
  14. Did you guys see Oudin's shoes? Indeed, she must have been playing from another planet. In the same way the g-slam-titles make a mockery of the number one ranking system, Oudin's shoes make mockery of the trade mark female canvasses.

From asefras, on Tue 8 Sep 12:05PM
  15. Bobito, I agree completely, it will be interesting to see how Oudin copes after she is knocked out, I predict her to have a disappointing end to the year, struggling to win a match, this GS has certainly been a refreshing flash in the pan :X

  16. Actually Russians have no pain but a great interest to the talented young Melanie! Would be fantastic to see her in final with Serena or Kim. It' a pity that matches with both of these completely different players are impossible this time. Нave faith in yourself and you will win, Melanie and thanks for nice fresh air in tennis! Hope to see you in Moscow later this year!

  17. Bobito(24)

The Russians have a new name for their pain....Melanie "the Russian Slayer" Oudin! Point taken, Bobito but for now let's give her the thumbs up and credit. Oudin have become the ultimate "torn in the flesh" at this US Open so far. Whether she comes up short or win it all, she will definitely enjoy the moment. She COULD be the new face of the US Women Tennis after The Williams Sisters calls it a career but that is yet to be seen. We wouldn't wanna jump the gun with expectation. Congratulation, Oudin!

  18. Good! Tha ladies game is has been SO predictable for years now. At last we are seeing a tournament where the top seeds are no winning every match with ease and contesting the semi's etc against the same people.
Equal pay for a half to 2/3 of the time on court that the men have. Now THAT's truly unfair!

From crispyduck, on Tue 8 Sep 9:27AM
  19. On paper not one of these quarter finalists could give Serena a game, the titles hers for the taking.

From Ronsenglish, on Tue 8 Sep 9:27AM
  20. Well she is only 17 and having beating all top 3 players in a row - what a feat ! Her court coverage , speed and slice returns were commendable.A player that returns better shots that yours ,set after set to the baseline left opponent wondering, mentally thinking what to do next.
Put it another way she will be able respond to encounter any situation and think quick to stay on course with her opponents in the next match.
