Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has praised owner Ellis Short for the financial backing he has given the club.
The Irish-American businessman has sanctioned spending of around £31million on new players since completing his takeover at the Stadium of Light, funding the recent arrivals of the likes of Darren Bent, Michael Turner, Lee Cattermole and Fraizer Campbell.
However, Short has also impressed upon Bruce and chairman Niall Quinn the need to balance the books, and the club has raked in £19million in sales with Dean Whitehead, Danny Collins, Grant Leadbitter and Carlos Edwards among those to have left.
Bruce said: "Since last Christmas, this club has lost something like 21 players and we have added seven; that shows we are getting the squad into a healthier position.
"That wouldn't be possible without the owner we have here, who recognises the need to invest in order to improve the football club."

3 brain cells??? What about Steve Highway? And erm... Steve Coppell? They both went to college man. Footballers aren't stoopid, look how much they get paid.
Tony, I'm afraid I agree with Malc D. Your comment 7 was pompous, puffed up and just a little bit rude. I reckon you either have an ego as big as a bankers bonus or as small as NUFCs transfer kitty. Which one Tone?
How's the dog muck diet by the way?
not bad buisness that 31 million spent and 19 million made of player sales.and you probs wouldnt have used the players youve sold anyway and im a newcastle fan.
John Connoly
I wasn't apologising as I have nothing to apologise for, As for Sean, He tries, as for correcting his grammar and spelling , I think its come from his fellow mackems and not from,as you say, the geordie posters. After all you can hardly speak the queens english as it is.
Did you see the press cuttting yesterday about S Bruce regretting the sale of D Collins? Does my statement not ring true that I made last week and you were so quick to pick up on.?????

you astound me totally. THIS IS A FOOTBALL FORUM DISCUSSION BOARD,or hasnt that sunk into your pompous, inadequate brain.
I don't proport to know all about football, nor the stats, however, I do know quite a lot about my team, having watched them for nearly 50yrs.
Now when you can match this experience and put your "experience" into legible discussion on this football forum without being insulting, abusive or petty, i may well talk to you on a regular basis.
MALCOLM D(oughnut)
You seem obsessed with what people know or dont know about football, obviously you would consider yourself to "know" a lot about football, does this mean you can reel off stats from obscure games that took place 25 years ago or do you consider yourself to be an expert in the finer points of the game? Either is a load of rubbish, anyone can learn stats if they are bored enough and as for the game itself, not much to know really and anyone who has played at any level would tell you that, i bet you are one of these people who listen to the pundits on telly (who get paid vast sums to analyse a 5 yard pass) and you think they are a football genius. Its a ridiculously simple game but theres always the morons who treat it like rocket science - if theres so much to know how come most players have about 3 brain cells?
MALCOLM D, well as long as we got that sorted and I accept your apology.
Speaking of snotty nosed kids, where's Sean A. He must be tired after his first couple of days back at school. I bet his teacher fell of her chair when he handed his English in. I don't know if anyone can remember how bad it was when he first started posting but I think it's improved dramatically since then, thanks to us Geordies keeping him right.
John can you stop going on about the past as I am concentarating on the present with my hopes for the future, all you seem to do is harp on about the past. I am refering purely to this point in time and nothing else.
As i said beefore I do not have a problem corresponding with you , but I do take exception to your so call football fan experts who know absolutely Sweeet bugger all. I am not a snotty nosed kid and have been red n white all my life and i am prepaered to discuss things rationally, but with some you just cant do that. By the way, i do not have any problem seperating fact from fiction. You may well come back up and may well be a bigger draw than us( then again that could be fiction) but at this point in time , you are not and we are and thats a fact.
MALCOLM D, you were going ok until the last line.
We have signed players in the past that would go nowhere near you and if we come back up next season, we will once again be a much bigger draw than you could ever be.
Comment two
Don't quote facts unless you know they are correct. No-one but the board and manager Knows how much has been spent exactly.
fact remains that we have spent money wisely and a darn site more than you lot have spent in this transfer window and gotten better players than you could ever hope to sign .
So in actual fact SAFC have spent 12 million.......hardly the warchest promised. Plus the players brought in are no better than the ones shipped out!!
Harrods indeed........
Even spin doctor Quinn cant make these figures sound like serious investment
It's probably the way forward. Cut the squad, cut the bills and don't go stupidly into debt. The FA should and at sometime will slap a cap on the ridiculous amount some teams spend. They should take a leaf out of the playstation book. You get a certain amount of money and it's up to you to use it wisely.
