Home win for masterful Stoner

Australia's Casey Stoner overcame a persistent wrist injury and the disappointment of relinquishing his world title last week to clinch his home MotoGP at Phillip Island for the second successive year.

2008 Australian GP Casey Stoner - 0

The 2007 world champion beat Valentino Rossi by more than six seconds to the delight of the 50,541-strong home crowd, several thousand of whom stormed across the track at the conclusion of the race. American Nicky Hayden finished third.

Rossi, who had treatment on his neck after falling during qualifying on Saturday, wrapped up his fifth world MotoGP world title, and sixth premier-class title overall, in Japan last week.

"It wasn't really a disappointment because I lost the championship when I had those two crashes, and Valentino rode really well," the 22-year-old Stoner said.

"Before the championship last year we didn't expect even to be in the top three and to be world champion last year and at the moment we're running second this year is something you have to be proud of, no matter what.

"If we have the opportunity to fight for it again next year then great but we're very happy on [winning] the home GP." Stoner, who will have surgery at the end of the season to fix a broken bone in his wrist, blasted away from pole on his Ducati and led for all 27 laps of the 4.45-km track in sunny conditions.

Rossi started on the fourth row in 12th and moved through the field before he caught Hayden on the final lap. He has finished outside the top-three just twice in 16 races this season.

Britain's James Toseland equalled his best result in MotoGP, finishing sixth for the sixth time this season.

Toseland, who was celebrating his 28th birthday, said he was pleased with the result despite running in fourth for much of the race.

In an eventful outing, Toseland overtook Rossi and then had to deny over-aggressive riding when passing Honda's Andrea Dovizioso on the final lap.

"I knew fourth was up for grabs so I tried to pass Andrea at Honda hairpin on the last lap. We ran a bit wide and Andrea seemed a bit upset but I passed him without touching him. I am sorry if he is upset, but he is upset for no reason.

"I was fighting for the best result of my MotoGP career so I had to try something. Shinya came by as I ran wide but I passed him back at Siberia, only for him to come right back underneath me because I ran a bit wide again.

"I am just happy with the way I rode. I rode hard and I am really pleased that on my birthday I put a good show on and I could enjoy it. I was riding my heart out and when I have a ride like that and I pass Valentino it encourages me even more."

Earlier, France's Mike di Meglio won the 125cc world title with a dominant victory ahead of Stefan Bradl of Germany. Hungary's 2007 world champion Gabor Talmacsi finished third.

Italy's Marco Simoncelli clinched the 250 race and extended his world championship lead to 37 points after an intriguing battle with closest rival Alvaro Bautista of Spain. Finland's Mika Kallio finished third.

  1. to all stoner fans...
have u guys ever seen stoner could win the race, when he started from the 3rd row? if its not, ask him to do that. and after that then you can compare with ROSSI....

  2. It doesn't matter how many times someone crashes in qualifying and how low is his grid position as long as he is quick in the race and overtakes people. When someone crashes out from the lead after qualifying in pole, he is an idiot

Last and ultimate truth of 2008: Valentino Rossi, six time premier class champion 2001/02/03/04/05/08

  3. A few universal truths:
Rossi started the race in 12th, because Rossi only qualified 12th.
He only qualified 12th because he fell when trying to go faster.
Whose fault was it that Rossi fell?? His own!
Even his teammate qualified on the front row!

  5. Im a big Rossi fan, another brilliant display from the Undisputed GOAT Champion. To watch Rossi in a race like this shows exactly why he deserves that tag- he battles from anywhere on the grid and can beat anyone within his grasp. If it wasn't for Toseland's super battle with him he may have had enough time to catch Stoner- to beat him from way back there im honestly not sure about that. But if he started from even the third row it's a definate possibility. The only thing I give Stoner is that he came back after 5 crushing defeats to win his home gp, while being pressured by the most part by a clearly 'redbull' charged Hayden, who has been riding so much better lately. I hope Hayden rides at this level next year when he goes to Ducati as he has a great attitude to the sport. Well done Toseland super race!!

  6. He STONER won fair and square, and ROSSI got up to second because he is on a very fast yamaha on bridgestone tyres, Pity there are not more starters on fast bikes, i think every one should have the same HONDA Yamaha or Ducati, no difference, makes racing beter to see

  7. Masterful Stoner huh...what a joke.from pole to winning the gp is normal.Rossi started from 12th and finished second is the real thing of the weekend.if stoner starts a race from 12th or below he would get choked by other riders' exhaust fumes.wanna be greater than rossi?in your dreams kid.you're not even close.

  8. tm773, when Rossi was tempted to go to Yamaha, he didn't say Yes to them till he got a Yes from his crew chief Jeremy Burgess and his mehanics that they would make the move with him. Therefore while the Yamaha wasn't the championship winning bike when he started, he, and his mechanics (including 3 Australians), and using the wealth of knowledge built up in the Repsol team, transformed the Yamaha into a championship winning bike. The Ducati was not a championship winning bike when Stoner went there either. And I'm not saying it was all Stoner's making either.
It takes much more than just a rider to win a championship, the money, the crew of mechanics/technicians, the factory backing (producing parts, etc) and communication between all parties.

  10. What on earth are you Stoner fans on about??? How can you say Stoner's better than Rossi?? Ask yourselves these things ... Could Stoner have moved to an "also-ran" team and turned them round so quickly?? Could Stoner have had a hand in designing the 2009 R1? (would yahama have TRUSTED him to help design it???). The answer is a big fat no! Stoner's a talented rider, theres no doubt about it, but he pales into insignificance next to Rossi. How do i know?? Just look at the FACTS and the STATS!! How many race wins? How many World Championships?? If Rossi's at the back of the grid, does he sit and cry about it and blame everyone around him?? No, he gets his head down and arse up and gets on with the job in hand, and he actually improves when the odds are against him!!!! And he does this because he's a World Champion through and through not some wannabe champ riding a superb bike. (Hayden, i'm talking to you too!)
Stoner's better than Rossi?? Give your tiny little head a shake, and come back in 5 years IF his stats get anywhere near Rossi's.

  11. when troy was in motogp he was on a brand new bike with ducati and it only took them 3 seasons to become world champions and i think ull find that troy in 2006 the last race of the motogp season after winning the wsbk championship he won a ride on the motogp bike and beat rossi by some 12 seconds. im more of a ducati fan than a stoner fan but the guy has got pure talant. im not denyin that rossi isnt good he is but fair play to stoner to give him a run for the title as no one else is good enough in the feild!!!!

  12. Anybody else noticed the 'warmth' recently between Stoner and Rossi? - really good to see, excellent racers and who can't wait untill next season! One tyre, Lorenzo fit, Haydon on a Duke, year two for Toseland, Awesome

  13. i am not going to argue with all the rossi fans in the world about who is the best rider, sure Rossi is, but....me as a ducati fan and therefore also a stoner fan am looking at it from an other angle:

shouldn't we all be race fans instead of clapping, shauting and lauching when stoner falls? like in laguna seca, Brno and misano? I was there at Brno, traveled 1000km to get to see my first live motogp ever....i enjoyed all weekend practise, qualification and the race but I hated the reaction of all these so called Rossi fans who started to shout when stoner felt....i was realy disappointed i all these fans!!

Rossi definetely is (one of) the best ever but he sure has the worst fanclub of the world!!!

  14. T'wos a great race, Rossi's climb through the pack, Hayden & Stoner's dogged battle til
Nicky's rear lost grip, My highlight being the battle for 4,5,6,7&8th places during the entire race. And lay off Casey, he claimed pole, got off to a good start, kept up
consistent lap times for most of the race & came home a winner. I'snt that the aim of
    most riders in the race.

From Bindle, on Mon 6 Oct 6:55AM
  15. Hayden is just too @#$% the tires. He comes from big bikes not little 250s which is what moto gp has become. He has to make the adjustment. everyone else up front has come up through the 125 / 250s. Take off the electronics and it would be Hayden, Rossi, and maybe Caprarossi. Rossi is the best hands down. He's won on everything.

  16. to chrisbmw323... you sound like a true aussie, moner with injured hand...LOL...go change his dippers, Rossi won a race in the beginning of the season with no foot peg! and won a countless races with worst injuries! As for Baylis, i'm a fan of Baylis! And moner doesn't deserve to have his name next to Troy Baylis, Baylis was still young when hi raced in MotoGP with and i never seen him even close to Rossi! so straighten up your knowledge base and then comment!

  18. If Rossi was on the front row he would have won, No question about it... The way he moved through the pack was in true Rossi style, James gave him a good few laps which was great to see! Casey needs a clear track to win we've seen that time and time again, Otherwise he cries and moans about anything and everything...

From Woofit, on Sun 5 Oct 11:51PM
  19. Masterful Stoner???? Rossi was unfortunate to fall yesterday. If he did not, chances are he would have won, be it pole or no pole. Stoner did not feel the Rossi pressure from start to finish as Rossi was not there. If Stoner really did, he might FALL AGAIN!? Who knows? :)

Hayden? Seriously to me, he won the 2006 Championship with sheer luck! Let's look back how many victories did the Kentucky Kid win? He chalked up points from podiums of 2nd and 3rd places mainly.

  20. Comment hidden due to its low rating. Show

stoner is the best dont forget he is riding with a broken hand ! if rossi was on the front row stoner would have increased his race pace. its not just the duke thats keeping stoner up the top if it was his team mate would be there with him like lorenzo is with rossi have anyone thought that yamaha have improved? if troy bayliss was younger he would show rossi how its done no doubt .
