Int Football - England back on the rise

Eurosport - Wed, 08 Oct 13:56:00 2008

Fabio Capello's England have risen one place in the FIFA world rankings to 14th in the wake of their World Cup qualifying win in Croatia.

2008 England Rio Ferdinand - 0

Fabio Capello's side recorded a superb 4-1 win in Zagreb last month, and moved up one spot as Romania plummeted five to 18th.

Scotland had hoped to leapfrog England after pulling to within one place, but instead tumbled 10 spots to 26th following a shock 1-0 defeat in Macedonia.

George Burley's men lost 156 points, the most of any team, because in the corresponding month last year they beat France away - the points earned from that match no longer count.

European champions Spain remained top for a fourth straight month after extending their lead over world champions Italy.

World Cup qualifying wins over Armenia and Bosnia were enough to keep Vicente Del Bosque's side comfortably clear of the Italians, who also enjoyed qualifying victories over Georgia and Cyprus in the past month.

Brazil climbed above the Netherlands and Croatia into fourth place off the back of their World Cup qualifying draw with Bolivia and away win over Chile.

Wales, the lowest-ranked home nation, fell eight places to 61. They are now below Congo, New Zealand and Saudi Arabia.

  3. joglory - it's not what they did in 1990 or 2000 that counts. The point about Egypt is good one, they are much better side than the USA or Scotland.

  7. Surely Egypt should be in Cameroon's Place? They've won the last 2 African Nations Cups and seemingly aren't even in the top 20?!!

Czechs are also suprisingly high given they've never acheived anything!

    Complete Fifa / Reefer Madness!

  9. Hey Davy H what ever you call yourself. It seems it has since not stick into your thick scoll that the Indomitable Lions are twice vice Africa Champions, Olumpic medalist 2000, 4 times African Champions,Confederations Cup finalist against France and recently Coton Sport of Garoua(Cameroon) will surely play the final of African Champions League, it should go down your block brain that it is because of Cameroon performance during the WC 1990 that Africa was granted 5 places for the wolrd cup and the list continue. I am sure u must be a Nigerian cos u always like to compare your football skills with ours but remember we beat u twice to carry the cup even rigth behind Asu-rock. Fait pi-pi, nous somme votre grand ne tente meme pas.

  12. Why would Wales be included ? This is about football !

    From doc_scrumpy, on Wed 8 Oct 12:28PM
  13. Depends where Wales are on the international rankings mate, though I find it odd they list the first 38 only, why not a round 40.

  15. i am absolutely sickened by the fact tha wales are not included in these rankings. i can see you have included all the home nations except for wales and view this injustice as a racial slur on wales. i hope i future posts there will be rom for the welsh on these rankings.
