Two goals in four minutes just before half-time put Scunthorpe into the next round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy with a 2-1 win over local rivals Grimsby.
Midfield man Sam Togwell headed them in front in the 38th minute from a free-kick curled in by Ian Morris.
And Morris himself then got on the scoresheet in the 42nd minute with a cracking right foot shot from just outside the box.
But Grimsby staged a second half fight-back as they looked to try and impress new manager Mike Newell, who was watching from the stands, and midfield man Nick Hegarty reduced the arrears in the 49th minute when he drilled an angled shot past goalkeeper Josh Lillis.
The Mariners were then twice denied by the woodwork as they fought for an equaliser.
Defender Ryan Bennett rattled the bar with a 58th-minute free-kick and he was again denied by the woodwork 10 minutes from the end with a header from a corner.
Scunthorpe missed the chance to extend their lead when Togwell was denied by a great save from keeper Phil Barnes before leading marksman Gary Hooper was guilty of a bad miss in the closing minutes.
