Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel does not need an operation on his right knee and should return to action by Christmas.
The Slovakia centre-back damaged his posterior cruciate ligament after a sickening landing during the 3-2 win at Manchester City.
He received oxygen on the pitch and was carried off on a stretcher and it was feared that he could be out for the season.
But Reds spokesman Ian Cotton said: "Martin was examined by a specialist today, who confirmed the player does not require surgery and is expected to be back playing by Christmas."
Until his return, boss Rafael Benitez has Daniel Agger and Sami Hyypia available to partner Jamie Carragher in the centre of defence.

Re- the Alan Smith at Anfield posts. Stop trying to stir reactions to something that never happened. I can assure you the majority of Liverpool fans at least applauded Alan Smith as he left the pitch (some gave him a standing ovation) as he didn't go down from a tackle, he went down blocking a free kick from John Arne Riise. Some United & Liverpool mates of mine that actually went to that match made a point of commenting on the home fans reactions to it at the time. None of them mentioned "any" booing whatsoever. Look it up if you don't believe it. END OF.
if i could, i would help him in his recovery... we have in his person a DESTROYER in front of Reina... Get well, son!
WHO CARES? NEVER HEARD OF HIM.
RESPONSE to 150.....learn how to spell thick @#$%

But i will NEVER EVER stoop to your level. ; )
This is great news...I was expecting this to be MUCH worse. Get well soon, mate.
He's a great player and Christmas will seem like forever, but at least it didn't turn out worse. Wish you well, man!
PS: I wonder if any of the losers writing their frustrations in here even know how to read.. Probably not. This is a report on Skrtel's condition, either limit your comments to that or go back to the zoo you escaped from..
responce to 145....Alan Smith booed off the pitch and ambulance attacked while he was being taken to hospital great supporters youve got.
Wasnt Alan Smith boed off at an-failed with a broken leg so well done you blues...mufc forever
I'm a City fan who was at the game on Sunday and I can assure that only a minority of City fans booed Skrtel off the pitch. I have good hearing and my judgement is that the booing came from an area where the fans could clearly see his kick into Jo's back, deeming it justifiable to boo him for his previous assault. Carragher was also booed earlier for his two unpunished lunges on Robinho (which were from behind - biased ref!), hence, opposing players are booed by fans for their actions and not for being injured! Anyway, idiots who assume that all City fans booed him off obviously weren't at the game, therefore shouldn't voice their opinion before knowing the facts as the majority showed a mark of respect by applauding him off the field.
Get well soon Martin. Delighted the injury is not as bad as first feared. You are a great player and very important to us Pool fans. I hate to see any player being injured regardless of who they play for. Those who jeer and take delight at seeing any player hurt are sad @#$%.
Real Football Fan Here.
