Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel does not need an operation on his right knee and should return to action by Christmas.

FOOTBALL 2008/09 Premier LEague Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel receives treatment - 0

The Slovakia centre-back damaged his posterior cruciate ligament after a sickening landing during the 3-2 win at Manchester City.

He received oxygen on the pitch and was carried off on a stretcher and it was feared that he could be out for the season.

But Reds spokesman Ian Cotton said: "Martin was examined by a specialist today, who confirmed the player does not require surgery and is expected to be back playing by Christmas."

Until his return, boss Rafael Benitez has Daniel Agger and Sami Hyypia available to partner Jamie Carragher in the centre of defence.

  7. Liverpool [Football365 review]
To win the title, a team must win when playing badly. Liverpool have done that. To win the title, a team must win from the jaws of defeat. Liverpool had done that even before this weekend (scoring twice in the final five minutes against Middlesbrough in late August). To win the title, a team must be lucky. Liverpool were very lucky at City (their comeback not possible without the incredible miss of Robinho and the dismissal of Pablo Zabaleta six minutes before Fernando Torres' equaliser).

There's a long, long way to go but up until this point of the season there is little or nothing else that Liverpool could have done to prove they are genuine contenders.

  9. I wish him a speedy recovery. Such an injury is bad news.
But remember Alan Smiths injury at Anfield?? Few laughs and cheers when that happened....so Liverpool fans dont give it if you cant take it.
And to be honest, it shouldnt have happened, he should have been sent off for his Cantona impression....if that was Rooney, Diouf, Vieira or previously Roy Keane...or pretty much anyone else, you can not say they would still be on the pitch for such a challenge.

  13. To the people who think it's funny that Skrtel has been injured, I suffered a similar injury playing football 3 months ago. I managed to tear my meniscus, and my anterior cruciate ligament. It has already been 3 months and I've still got another op and 8 months till i'm fit enough to play again, thats even if I want to. Although I do think that is because I'm going through the NHS and he'll be getting top Drs. It is gunna be a long hard road to get fit again and people should be giving support rather then taking the piss. Good luck Skrtel!
