The France international failed to turn up on Tuesday afternoon and, according to newspaper La Provence, was ordered to apologise to his team-mates.

"It was an unforeseen delay," said Marseille coach Didier Deschamps. "We're not talking about being a minute late, but missing an entire training session."

But while he was slapped with a hefty fine, Deschamps attempted to play down the incident and insisted it was not the former Lyon player's fault.

He said: "There are people above me, directors, who are there to apply the rules. This punishment has passed me by.

"He hasn't been told to stand in the corner. He has been hit financially. That's normal."

Ben Arfa has been linked with a move to the Premier League, with Arsenal, Manchester United and more recently Wigan reportedly interested in acquiring his services.

  1. was supposed to be a real prospect for the future a few years ago. He and Benzema marked for the national team whilst playing together at Lyon. Well, he hasn't improved and seems to have no chance of staking a claim in the national team whilst attacking midfielders like Ribery and Nasri are around. No wonder the guy's gone from interesting man u and arsenal to wigan.
