Drogba urges Vieira swoop

Thu, 08 Oct 09:10:07 2009

Didier Drogba has urged Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti to make a move for ex-Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira in the January transfer window.

The Barclays Premier League leaders are unable to bring in new players due to a transfer embargo imposed by FIFA, but should the club's appeal against that ruling be successful, Drogba believes veteran midfielder Vieira should be the first name on Ancelotti's wish-list.

"It would be a good move for Chelsea to bring Patrick in," the Ivory Coast international told The Sun.

"Don't forget we are going to miss several players in January, particularly in midfield, because of the African Nations Cup.

"We played against Vieira last summer and he was very strong."

It has been reported that Vieira, currently at Inter Milan, is seen by Ancelotti as ideal cover for Michael Essien and John Obi Mikel, who will both be taken out of the equation by African Nations Cup duty.

The 33-year-old Vieira was at Stamford Bridge on Sunday to see Chelsea return to the top of the league with victory over Liverpool.

  1. i hav a feelin that fifa will reduce the ban but only narrow it down to one transfer window and most likelly it will be the january period, because if they allow chelsea to trade in january and not the summer chelsea will just spend big in january so they wont have to worry about the summer,, its gona be tuff for chelsea if there not allowed ,, having only 1 holding midfielder left while the rest go too the nations cup and belleti is not an out and out holding midfielder. Ancelloti shud get to work now on either looking deep into the academy for a youngster that could at least be an average cover for belleti or try get a player like ivanovich and put him in that possition in training and see can he hold out ,, to be honest people hav said chelsea hav loads of cover like ballack , joe cole and matijc but it dont take a genius to no that thes players are attack minded and hav no chance of holding up this possition for 4 weeks its crazy,,, anyway lets just hope that uefa(b.a.s.t.e.r.d.s)change there terrible decision and fine chelsea because its a joke , its totally wrong for one its stopping a club to trade (2)its stopping players the right to play in the u.k(3)its stopping a great team who has came so close to winning the champions league 5 seasons in a row to strengthin ther squad to compete again ,,, viera would be a good player if he was allowed to join

  2. Well,i guess that a bright idea for Drogba but he needs to know that their are other midfielder at stamford bridge, like Ballack, Joe cole, and others. though i think its a good plan. but with things going like this, is chelsea sure that the ban shall be reduced

  4. are these people retarded or do they not know that they have a transfer ban in January...unless of course Chelsea knows something that the rest of us dont know, the only reason Chelsea is even remotely interested in Viera is because rivals Arsenal are showing an interest....bastrards are trying to force a bit of a premium for Patrick, dont bite AW stick to your price, tell Viera take it or leave it

  9. Titi Henry, Vieira and Campbell, hmmmm old but the experience the Arsenal needs and they won't stop the progress of the young apprentices...Bendtner, Sunu and Watts can keep learning from King Henry, Campbell can add experience to the back line and cover, do a better job than Silvestre, and Vieira can teach Song, Diaby and Denilson a thing or two, as well as cover Song in Jan. but i don't see this happening, non will join...maybe PV...but i would not be suprised if non joins. And why do Man U and Chelsea want old Gooners bad?

  11. First: How chelsea is going to bring Vierra if they r banned from doing any transfers by the FIFA??

Second: personally i dont think Vierra would go to chelsea even if this might boost his World Cup chances (which i doubt cause when essien returns he will lose his place).
He already knows that the himself, henry & tony adams r the present legends of arsenal and they have administrative & managerial position in the Emirates for the future.
So the question is: WOULD VIEARA SELL ALL THIS FOR ONE MONTH AT CHELSEA? (knowing that when Essien & Obi returns he will be on the bench)

  13. Viera is a incredible footballer but he may not maintain his prime at the age of 33. By the way, the squad is ageing, we need to bring in young and promising players instead even with a expensive price!!!
