Premier League - Teen hooliganism trebles

Fri, 08 Oct 14:17:00 2010

Teenage football hooliganism has trebled in the last three years, with children as young as 13 being banned from football grounds.

A report by the Association of Chief Police Officers has stated that 103 youths were involved in hooliganism incidents last season, compared with just 38 during the 2007-08 season.

As of the end of August some 280 teenagers were banned from football grounds, making up nearly 10 per cent of the 3,059 fans who

The youngest fan to be banned was just 13 years old; the oldest, 71.

The report added that, despite the huge rise in youth violence, overall the growth in incidents has slowed, and is still far lower than the levels recorded in the 1970s and 1980s.

But ACPO's football policing chief Andy Holt warned that the youth figures are a serious long-term concern.

"If they're engaging in football-related disorder at an earlier age, then we're going to be stuck with that sort of behaviour potentially for some while," he said.

"Iit is something that we are acutely aware of. People are coming through and engaging in football disorder who perhaps weren't around in the heyday of football violence 15-20 years ago.

"So it is a worrying trend that the younger element are starting to pick up on this sort of behaviour."

The ACPO figures showed that 47 per cent of the 221 reported incidents of football disorder last season involved youths, compared with 51 per cent of the 182 incidents the previous season and 33 per cent of 114 incidents in 2007-08.

  4. Just a bit of harmless fun. Boys will be boys. If they really want to stop it, they should ban alcohol from the grounds, have all seating stadiums, charge an arm and a leg to get into the grounds, have mediocre players on the pitch, have you sitting in the rain: sober, skint, bored. OH, that's how it is now ! Blow me, no wonder they have a bit of a scrap. There is nothing else to do !!!!!

  5. @ 20 - wigana... the lad who shouted at the player was lucky to only get a three year ban. If the player had been black he'd have been called a racist and locked up for 18 months in a young offenders institution.

  9. I came over from Spain and the millions of English.Sheep.Shaggers are cowards 1 on 1. In groups they try to act hard with their embarrassing effeminate english.limey accents. The english supporters are scum. Hundreds of thousands of them chant racist sayings every weekend at football grounds.
These are the people, the english, that the French Normans conquered.

  11. HOOLIGANISM is not on the rise all these stats show is that the police in the grounds are nicking young lads for nothin. i watched a young lad who was 14 get nicked at spurs last season for shoutin your a f*uckin disgrace to the wigan players at full time (we had just lost 9-1) he went to court and was given a 3year ban why is this then put down as hooliganism? the answer is the more arrests there are in grounds the more police needed in grounds = bigger bills for the police to put into clubs plus it means the football intelligance officers are kept in work. ( F.I.Os are the biggest waste of tax payers money going, half of them didnt have a clue when and where trouble was ever going to take place)

  12. Cut to the root of the cause - football should be banned, I mean it's a pretty pointless activity that produces overinflated egos in the overpayed players and group psychosis in the fans.

  18. Ridiculous, I can't understand why people do this, I'd rather chew my own hand off. I agree that, as previous comments have said, that my (yes my, I'm a teenager) generation needs a lot more discipline, thankfully I spent three years living with my grandma, she's a traditionalist who doesn't take any @#$%.

  20. As these uneducated idiots get to the age where they are supposedly an adult, they think they can behave as they want and no repercusions will happen, so unless the police step up the arrests and punishment, they will see a return of football hooliganism like the 80's had, and with the slack attitude the police now have towards young offenders, its going to result in many lives being lost and football being no longer a sport we all enjoy. put kids from school in the army and teach them some dicipline and respect, if a bloke beat on a teenager he would get banged up, but if a teenager/teenagers beat on a bloke they get a caution,
