Haye hoping for Klitschko bout

David Haye is hoping for a "mega-showdown" with Ukraine's WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko after stripping Russian giant Nikolai Valuev of the WBA belt.

The Briton, who overcame a colossal weight and height disadvantage to outpoint the towering "Beast from the East" in Germany on Saturday, must next fight the WBA's mandatory American challenger John Ruiz.

Klitschko, whose brother Vladimir holds the IBF, IBO and WBO heavyweight belts, is scheduled to take on American Kevin Johnson in Berne, Switzerland, on December 12.

"I am ready to fight anyone in the world and I have right now the same belt as Muhammad Ali, Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield and George Foreman," Klitschko told BBC radio on Sunday.

"I am ready to show everyone that I am the strongest in the world," he added. "I am ready at any time to give him (Haye) a fight and knock him out."

Haye, who spoke of his desire to "clean up the division" after stunning the tallest and heaviest world champion of all time in Nuremberg, said he was up to the challenge.

"Let's get it on, let's make it happen," said the 29-year-old Londoner, Britain's first heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis retired six years ago.

"He's got a fight in December, I hope he wins his fight and wish him luck with that one. I've got to get John Ruiz out of the way and then we can make a mega-showdown next year. I'm looking forward to that."

Haye had been due to fight Vladimir Klitschko earlier in the year but the bout fell through due to the Briton being injured.

He had also been planning to fight Vitali in September until the Valuev fight was made.

"Ruiz is the mandatory challenger for the WBA so if I don't fight him they'll take the title off me so I don't fancy giving up the title after winning it," said Haye.

"So it will be John Ruiz (next) and hopefully that will be in the UK. I definitely want to have another homecoming fight ... it would be amazing if I could fight John Ruiz in London.

"We haven't thought about dates, I've got to see how my hand heals. I've got to go and get an X-ray and see the extent of the break and take it from there."

Haye said after Saturday's fight that he feared he had broken his hand in the early rounds while Ruiz, who fought the same night, suffered a bad cut over his eye and is also likely to be out of action for a while.

Haye's performance, after all the trash-talking in the build-up, drew plaudits at home.

"I thought he had the talent and the speed and ability to beat the guy," said retired heavyweight Frank Bruno.

"It took a lot of guts to come from cruiserweight to move up to heavyweight and fight a man mountain like he did. And he stuck to his guns."

"King David Slays Russian Giant," boomed the Mail on Sunday in a headline. "Hayelelujah!" exclaimed the News of the World.

Haye said it was a lifelong ambition fulfilled.

"I said to anyone that would listen that I'd be heavyweight champion of the world. I am that now, so I've got a big grin on my face," he declared after a night partying with family and friends.

  1. Valuev, because of his size, is one of the most overrated boxers in history. Now, everyone says Haye should fight and knock out Vladimir K. and then his brother ... In the meantime I'd like to remind those who forget too quickly that Valuev was already beaten by a smaller guy called Chagaev (1.85m against 1.91m of Haye). What happened to Chagaev afterwards? He was knocked out by Vladimir K. ... exactly the way he or his brother will send Haye into dreamland and ... oblivion.

  2. Comment 61) if you expected that ight to be the most epic fight in history then you really havnt got a clue about boxing ans should'nt be commenting on this thread u plank! Haye was awsome against Valuev he had to fight someone 7 stone heavier so he was never going to go toe toe with him, and he landed some great counter punches in the fight and had his hand not been injured im sure he would have been more agresive for longer periods of the fight like was saw in the 12th!!

And Valuev was a world champion who had lost 1 in 52 and haye had him swinging and missing by a gd 6-7 inches at times u cant lose if your not being hit, and i thought Haye put in a classey and mature performance that was spot on tacticly. Haye clearly has the power to blow the Klitschko's away

Best thing to happen to the heavyweight division

  3. While Valuev isn't anywhere near that good a Heavyweight, the fact was, after 52 fights, he'd never been close to being knocked down. Haye hurt him in the 12th and the giant was nearly felled. Haye also showed he doesn't just blast people gung-ho fashion, but he can be cool and box too. I think his tactics were spot on and I think big credit should go to the judges who scored the fight fairly. Haye deserved to win, he hurt the behemoth that is Valuev and I see Ruiz and the Klitschkos being KO'd. But Vitali Klitschko is the best Heavyweight and Haye needs him....once he's smashed up Wladimir. What are your thoughts there Jack? I think Haye will certainly KO Wladimir. On the plus side....3 British World Champions! Lets have Haye v Ruiz, Froch v Kessler and Khan v Malignaggi on the same bill...any takers?

  6. comment 53... didnt expect haye to stand and trade, but if he's as good as he keeps telling everyone, he should have been able to stay in range, slip/block the punches and throw some effective counter punches. not stay way out of range and throw a couple of punches at the end of each round. if boxers and promoters expect the public to spend £15 per fight, they need to serve up better fights than that dog @#$%

  9. i see stevejones is still on ere spouting out the same p ish over n over again wat a knobjockey..n i think that if haye is as fast as he says he is why couldnt he stand his ground n dodge the punches instead o runnin away most good boxers will do that they stand thier ground make the opponent throw a punch then dodge n counter it ???? no way will he rule for a long time like tyson thats just crazy talk we wont see the likes of tyson again he was awsome!!!!!!!!

  10. Fantastic win for David Haye, it's great to have a British champ. However, the road ahead is an even tougher challenge apart from the ridiculous mandatory defence against Ruiz. This is purely a way of bigging-up the new champ, even David looked uncomfortable with this & emphasised the mandatory nature of the defence. There are plenty more credible challengers, e.g. Odlanier Solis would be a great next fight as he just edged David in 2001 World Amateur final. Also, of course David Tua. This would give a lot more credibility to WBA & boxing in general

  19. Why do people keep saying haye was running away. the art of boxing is hitting without being hit. it is a boxing match, not UFC. he did his homework, knew what he had to do & how to do it & he succeeded - it is tactics. He went to win a belt. fighting a man that much bigger, when you have already moved up tot he weight, with a broken hand is some amazing feat. it doesnt matter is valuev was rubbish or not, thats his problem. haye did what he had to do. why do people want our sportsmen to fail all the time? if they are good, then they are good. i am a massive footy fan but the english team are massively overated - they should look to haye for inspiration.

From KarlB, on Mon 9 Nov 10:18AM
  20. i cannot beleive the decision was given to haye. i cant see how you can run away for most of the round, throw 3 punches and win the round. it was the most negative, boring performance i have ever seen. if this is the best that boxing can offer, the sport is in real danger. the ufc is the biggest growing sport at the moment and that rubbish on saturday will have more and more fight fans switching to the ufc.
