Carolina Hurricanes netminder Cam Ward was hospitalised in Columbus, Ohio, after his left leg was cut open by a skate.

Ward suffered the injury after colliding with Columbus forward Rick Nash in the first period of the Blue Jackets' 3-2 victory, the Hurricanes said.

He received stitches, is in stable condition and is expected to be released from a Columbus hospital on Sunday, the team added.
