Colchester boss Aidy Boothroyd paid tribute to a professional display from his side as they comfortably saw off Conference South side Bromley 4-0 at Hayes Lane.
Simon Hackney's half-volley and Kayode Odejayi's solo effort ensured the League One outfit had daylight at half-time before headed goals from Clive Platt and Steven Gillespie sealed the win.
"It was a good result for us - we did our homework beforehand and it paid off," said Boothroyd.
"The lads were excellent and we played well in parts, but the 4-0 scoreline maybe flattered because Bromley played their part in the game.
"Our two forwards Odejayi and Platt were a handful again - they're always a handful - and I was glad to see Gillespie score because he's been playing well but hasn't been getting in the team."
