Sunderland boss Steve Bruce claims referee Kevin Friend may have been influenced by the White Hart Lane crowd when he kept Heurelho Gomes on the pitch during the 2-0 Barclays Premier League defeat to Tottenham.
Friend awarded a penalty when Gomes brought down Darren Bent early in the second half but only produced a yellow card despite the Spurs goalkeeper being the last man, with the Brazil international saving the spot-kick after his reprieve.
Bent's miss was a crucial moment in the game as Sunderland had gained momentum after falling behind to Robbie Keane's early strike. Tom Huddlestone wrapped up the 2-0 win with a thunderbolt off the crossbar but the talking point surrounded Bent's penalty.
"For me the goalkeeper's denied him a goalscoring opportunity so I can't go along with the referee's explanation to me which was he was going away from goal," Bruce said. "That's a load of nonsense.
"I think he's taken the ball around him. If you look at where the ball goes, it doesn't even go out of play, so Benty for me gets on the end of it, and yes there might be somebody on the line, but I would fancy him to score when he goes round the keeper in that situation.
"Now it might have been a different result, the reserve goalkeeper might have come on and saved it but we would have been playing against 10 men with half an hour to go so that would have given us a huge advantage." Bruce added: "I have to question if that had been the Stadium of Light we might have got a different decision."

Any sending off should have been with Bent walking down the tunnel. The man dived, faked the foul and therefore was guilty of a straight red card. Bruce is bleating on about luck, he's just got some by having a referee who can't see blatant trickery to win a penalty. Add that to his beach ball goal and he may well reflect on those two atrocious refereeing decisions as the luck that will keep his club in the premiership.
Downy
sense at last lad!

You obviously wont agree with my point of view because you support THFC. No, I didnt watch it on a B n W 14" tv from across the room and please spell my name correctly. I watched as it happend, and the immediate replay and again on both MOTD progs and my opinion stays the same both were stonewall penalty's
The whole point I have been trying to make is one of inconsistency with the match officials and their definition and decision making of critical incidents during a game.
Some of the referees we are seeing in the EPL are not worthy of such a position and need to be sent back to the fizzy pop league where they belong.
We have a few excellent refs in the epl ,but not enough and this needs to be resolved by the FA urgently.
Yes Bent dived for the penalty he won but wouldn't any striker in the same situation dive, course they would, he went down honestly in the box earlier in the game and got nowt, so which out wieghs the other, honesty or cheating, swings & roundabouts people. Well deserved call up for DB, lets hope he wins a penalty against Brazil AND ROONEY TAKES IT!
FTM
....and, Sunderland should have had 2 penalties and Gomes should have been sent off (irrespective off any embellishment by Bent). So, it wasn't given - the ref bottled it - it happens.
More sinister is the way that scumbag Defoe deliberately crocked Gordon - note the Sunderland player hurdling Gomes in the first half when he too could have put the foot in.
Clearly the best team on the day lost that game - but that's life and football.
I was going to join in the debate with Cameron over MalCum's nonsense but its clear that the issue has been put to bed.
The Bent one should've had a penalty early on, but didn't get ot - too bad,
he clearly dived for the Pen he did get and duly missed it, hence the chant "That's why we sold you" which kinda applied to about half the sunderland team,
Bruce's comments were made immediately after the game, a few more views of the incident will probably change his mind, but he can never admit it publicly as it will undermine his players, we should be aware of how fragile Benty is when it comes to criticism, one comment from 'Arry last year and he sulked for about a month.
Ultimately the better team one, why do I say that cos We're 4th and sunderland...aren't
ergo we are better
MD. did you watch the replay on a 14" b & w TV from across the room???? In slow motion you could see Bent was already falling and actually Gomes never touched him prior to him going to ground. As for Cameron, yes he's toon army, but cool with it. He knows his stuff..... Just admit even with all the tottenham rejects in your team, you had to resort to cheating to try and win the game.... Question is will Pav be wearing red and white stripes in January, seeing as you took the other cast offs you might as well take him too. Wish we still had Malbranque though...
Bent was going to ground before Gomes even got near him. I believe it's called diving!!!! Justice was served and to be fair Gomes was lucky to stay on the pitch with the wat the refss have been handing out red cards lately. Good bounce back win and let's move on from here....
Sorry MD, i was wrong re: insults.
I have honestly tried to be objective here, but we are going nowhere with this!
Time to move on; congrats to Master Bent on his deserved England call up btw.
Cameron
ps where were my insults ??? bit of paranoia creeping in ??????? just because i said you were writing tripe?? thats not a an insult its an opinion the same as you express on what we write on our board about our team!!!!!!!!
cameron
I dont think he is wrong and neither do a lot of SAFC supporters either, Having just watched the Everton west HAm game hands were raised and no cards were show to either player??? my point is purely the inconsistency being shown by officials in the best league in the world.
REF Bents penalty , well again I disagree with you, i thought both were penalties and he should have put it away. Gomez was the last player therefore should not have remained on the pitch, so i suggest you take off the Black n white zebras specs off and not be so patronising in your attempt on banter. i have seen hundreds of penalties like that given quite a few from Mr Shearer going down exactly the same!!!!! And Bent wasnt trying to get anyone sent off at all he was just wanting the ref to apply the rules correctly. just watched said incident again and defo was two stone wall penalty's. Bents Momentum took him over when Gomez made contact put to bed good night
MD
take of your red & white tinted specs and look at the evidence man; he was falling long, long before he got near the 'keeper.
I have conceded that YES he should've had the first one, but defo NO for that!
If it had've been my team, i still would be man enough to admit it!
You are again missing my point; YES Bruce is well within his rights to criticise, - erm, did i say he was not!
What i am saying is that he is wrong in this instance.
All you have done is come on here hurling insults, and not even attempted to negate anything i have said.
Why?
Because you can't!
Do you honestly think it was a penalty MD?
What was your take on your players trying to get the keeper (a fellow pro) sent off?
Come on MD explain, make me see the error of my ways - explain to me how i am talking 'tripe'.
Was a penalty but lucky for us Harry's wife never took it!!
Both sides were missing key players, so twitter struggled without the beachball to partner him up front............COYS
Cameron
how can you write such utter tripe??? you mean to tell me that Your manager wouldnt do the same??? again you have avoided my question about Mr Shearer I posted the other day. S.Bruce is OUR manager and is entitled to criticise when its due. I have been sayimg for weeks the standard of refereeing in the EPL is not good at all and they deserve to be in the fizzy pop league where you are and then we would see how much you whine and moan??????
Comment-4, you are a fool!
What on earth are you talking about; you make no sense whatsoever!
Erm, who says Shearer is an 'expert' on such matters; fool, he is a television pundit!
The guy was falling long before he even got anywhere near the 'keeper; look at the evidence and try and deny it - ergo, it was a DIVE.
i was there right in front of goal, bent should have had the red card for diving, gomes didnt even touch him. bent was already going down as anyone could clearly see. it was the right outcome, and steve bruce is totally wrong. coys....
Didn't see the game - but if it was anyone but Bent, I'd agree that the penalty should be given - but let's face it, Bent can't shoot as well as 'arry's missus - so chances are he would have missed the goal even if he had stayed on his feet!
Cameron, you are a fool. You totally destroy your whole argument in 2 lines. "It defo wasn't a penalty, I don't care what Shearer said on MOTD." Do you mean Shearer the expert on such matters? Compared to you, the expert on writing garbage?
You gotta laugh at this whining hypocrite haven't you!
First up, it was defo NOT a penalty; it was laughable and Bent deserved a booking for diving (and i couldn't care less what Shearer said on MOTD!).
Secondly, after all the hoohah surrounding the West Ham player's alleged over reaction to the Jones boy's violent assault, what do i see? I see the safc players surrounding the ref, pleading for the Spurs 'keper to be sent off!!!!!
And then to cap it all, we have Steve 'the moan' Bruce; if that 'penalty' was given the other way he would be screaming blue murder! Another thing, penalty or not, there were absolutely no grounds for a red, dear me get a grip Brucey Boy!
I saw the highlights (and YES safc should've had a first half penalty), and have gone through the matchcast; YES safc probably deserved better, but that's football Brucey Boy (remember Blackburn at home?). Stop your whining, and just take it on the chin you sore, sore loser; oh, and less of the hypocrisy huh - yes, we all know you can't wait to take over at Old Trafford, but leave the hypocrisy 'til you get there!
