Hereford manager John Trewick was pleased his side made it through to the second round of the FA Cup but believes they can play better despite a 2-0 win over Sutton.
Frenchman Mathieu Manset put Hereford in front in the sixth minute with a close-range tap-in but was sent off following an incident with Sutton's Alan Pouton 21 minutes later.
Hereford's strong defence held firm before Ryan Valentine clinched their victory when he drilled home a penalty with four minutes remaining of a hard-fought contest.
"We are through to the next round and we know that we can play better," said Trewick.
"I thought Sutton put up a good effort and all credit to them for that. The sending off was always going to change the game and we had to readjust to that by playing in a certain way to get a result.
"We did that and I was pleased with our performance especially in the second half when we kept good shape and discipline and looked threatening on the break."
