A Gary Jones strike was the only goal of the game as Grimsby beat Brentford 1-0 at Griffin Park, their sixth straight league defeat. The experienced striker slotted past Simon Brown in the 57th minute to give the visitors the points at a wet and windy Griffin Park.
The home side could consider themselves a little unfortunate as they dominated possession and had many more chances but could not find the crucial goal.
Ross Montague headed against a post and Grimsby shot-stopper Phil Barnes saved well from Ryan Dickson at both the start and end of the first half.
Gary Smith shot into the side-netting and Lee Thorpe and Alan Connell were unable to scramble the ball home for a last-minute equaliser.
Danny North could have put Grimsby ahead in the first half but snatched at a shot and James Hunt could have sealed it late on but headed weakly.
