Gannon gutted after Trophy exit

Wed 09 Jan, 01:30 PM

Stockport boss Jim Gannon was left bitterly disappointed after his side were beaten at home by Grimsby in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.Jamie Clarke put the Mariners ahead on the hour when Conrad Logan parried a vicious 35-yard drive into his own net.

The lead lasted a minute as Anthony Pilkington's low 20-yarder squirmed through visiting goalkeeper Phil Barnes' grasp.

But County skipper Michael Raynes then sliced Nick Hegarty's left-wing cross into his own net to give Grimsby a Northern Area semi-final victory.

Gannon said: "There is a lot of disappointment - especially with the nature of the goals that we conceded.

"Some of our football was good but we didn't penetrate as much as we could have. When we did penetrate we didn't deliver the shot, the cross or the pass with as much quality as we could have."
