New plans could affect Welsh sides

Wed 09 Jan, 02:45 PM

Wrexham and Swansea's reserves could be allowed to play in the Welsh Premier League in controversial plans under consideration by the Welsh FA.The Welsh Premier League website reports the plan outlines proposals for five clubs to be thrown out of the league, reducing its size from 18 to 16 teams.

The move would make way for second string sides from the Swans, Cardiff and the Dragons.

Former secretary general Alun Evans, who was responsible for the formation of the League of Wales in 1992, is the man behind the new proposals.

The main attraction for the 'big three' would be their eligibility to qualify for Champions League and Uefa Cup places in 2009.

It is feasible they could finish in the top three fielding their reserve teams but then bring in first-team players for European games, while continuing to compete in the English Football League.
