Fantasy Golf: Tee 'Em Up !!

Eurosport - Wed, 09 Jan 16:17:00 2008

Way off the pace in your Fantasy Football league? Never fear, Fantasy Golf is here, and it is the perfect place to get your Fantasy revenge on your friends, family and co-workers.

GOLF 2006 - Jim Furyk - 0

The season started last week in Kapulua, but you can still join up and set up your own league where you can compete against your friends.

Each week here on "Tee 'Em Up" we will offer tips on players who could be worth picking to hopefully give you an edge over your rivals.

The full rules of the game can be found by clicking on the link below the picture, but basically, you select eight golfers each week - two members from our A List, four from the B List, and two from the C List - and then you pick four players to compete in each round.

This allows you to change your line-up as the tournament progresses, so you react to players hitting form (add 'em) or others failing to make the cut (drop 'em).

Point scoring is based per round - A golfer can receive a maximum of 20 fantasy points in each round of a tournament. The golfer with the lowest real-life score in a round receives 20 points. Other golfers receive 2 fewer points for every stroke they finish behind the leader (e.g., a golfer one stroke back for the round receives 18 points, a golfer two strokes back gets 16. Golfers 10 or more strokes back receive 0 points).

Ok so let's look at this week's event and we'll hopefully give you some tips.

The Tournament: The Sony Open

The Course: Waialae

This Hawaiian course is famed for its tight fairways so you want accurate hitters and solid putters this week. Last week at Kapalua the fairways were massive so accuracy wasn't as important, meaning there should be a different feel to the leaderboard this week.

A List Golfers

Tee 'Em Up - Jim Furyk and Charles Howell III look the stand-out picks here. Furyk is always a solid pick and his reliable putting should serve him well here. He has finished seventh and fourth here in the last two years and was a respectable fifth last week. Howell meanwhile, has the best stroke average on this course in the field (68.8) and came in second last year and fourth in 2005. Steve Stricker was fourth here last year (and second last week) and is worthy of consideration too, as is KJ Choi who was 13th and then fourth in his last two visits

Cut 'Em - Vijay Singh is a former champion here and will be on lots of rosters this week, but his putting wasn't up to scratch last week, and putting will be even more important this week.

B List Golfers

Tee 'Em Up - Stephen Ames had a third place finish last week and has finished seventh and eight in his last two completed visits on this course (pick him up). Angel Cabrera has never played on this course but has enough quality to be considered. Chad Campbell finished second here in 2006 but is inconsistent on this course - he could produce a good round or two though.

Cut 'Em - There aren't too many options around this week in the B list that jump out at you so last week's winner Daniel Chopra is probably worth adding to your eight but don't put him in your starting four. He has never been better than 28th at Waialae.

C List Golfers

Tee 'Em Up - If you are looking for a C List sleeper then you can't do any worse that Paul Goydos who won this event last year. Peter Lonard won the Australian PGA event last month and comes into the competition in good form. Shigeki Maruyama has had a few top 10 finishes here in the past so look out for him. While, Frank Lickliter fired two back-to-back 62s at the Tour qualifying tournament in December so you know he has a big round in him.

Cut 'Em - I know it is tempting to pick John Daly, but no, just no, especially as there are plenty on decent C options this week.

Happy fantasy golfing!
