Egypt midfielder Hossam Ghaly is set to join the growing transfer window signings at the Premier League's bottom club Derby County.

"We are not sure about his work permit situation but all being well he will be a Derby player," manager Paul Jewell said.

Ghaly, who is out of favour with Tottenham Hotspur, would be Derby's fourth recruit of the month following the arrivals of Argentine striker Emanuel Villa, former England defender Danny Mills and French winger Laurent Robert.

Meanwhile, Tottenham have officially ended their pursuit of Rangers and Scotland full-back Alan Hutton.

The north London club had been looking at the 23-year-old but it was reported that the player rejected them last week.

A Spurs spokesman said: "We have made it clear that we have no further interest in Alan Hutton."

Rangers manager Walter Smith never wanted Hutton to leave even though the club accepted an £8m bid.

Hutton also missed Rangers' training session on Monday and there was speculation the London club had reignited their interest and the 23-year-old may actually be set to make the move south.

However 'Gers boss Smith insists Hutton was just given the day off to rest after a hectic season.

Smith told the Daily Record: "Our indication from Alan is that he'd turned them down.

"That is where we are at. That's what he told us so we take his word for that.

"Obviously there are football aspects and financial aspects to any prospective transfer deal.

"Nobody here wanted Alan to leave for football reasons.

"But when you get offered that kind of money there is a situation where it becomes an acceptable deal, from a financial point of view.

"That was why we accepted the bid. But we were delighted when he decided to stay."
