Premier League - New probe into Tevez affair

Eurosport - Fri, 09 Jan 10:33:00 2009

The Premier League and the FA are to launch a fresh inquiry into West Ham's conduct over the Carlos Tevez affair.

FOOTBALL 2007-2008 Premier League - Carlos Tevez, West Ham - 0

The new investigation, into West Ham's dealings with the striker's representatives after the club had initially been fined £5.5 million for breaching league rules over third-party agreements, will be conducted jointly by the FA and the Premier League.

It follows the findings of an arbitration tribunal in favour of Sheffield United and against West Ham last year which decided Tevez should not have been able to play for the Hammers at the end of the 2006-07 season.

A joint statement said: "The Premier League and the FA are to institute a joint inquiry into the views expressed by the Independent Arbitral Tribunal chaired by Lord Griffiths in September 2008, which dealt with a compensation claim by Sheffield United against West Ham United brought under FA Rules.

"The joint inquiry will examine whether the conduct of West Ham United immediately after the Independent Disciplinary Commission's decision of 27 April 2007 amounted to further breaches of Premier League or FA Rules."

The inquiry means West Ham or individuals could face further disciplinary action but say they have nothing to hide from the new investigation.

A club statement said: "West Ham United will co-operate fully with the joint inquiry convened by the FA and Premier League.

"We have acted in good faith throughout the various inquiries and investigations into this matter and fulfilled the undertakings given to the Premier League following the initial penalty.

"We have nothing to hide and will ensure that this is once again reflected in our evidence to the FA and Premier League."

  1. It doesn't matter who you support, when are we going to wake up to the fact that the game we all love is being run and ruined by a bunch of self indulgent twonks whose first priority is themselves and you and I don't count!

  2. Kenneth - This is hardly a dissertation. The posts are even displayed as a speach bubble coming from a smiley face. I'm sure most people on hear can write and spell properly. This just isn't a situation were it matters. It says nothing about our education system. Even if people do have trouble with their spelling or grammar, you shouldn't discourage them from airing their views. Plenty of highly intelligent and successful people are dyslexic. Go find something important to complain about.

  3. I am a big football fan and read all of the football articles and the comments which follow. All I was saying is that so many people do not know how to spell, and do not know how to write or speak properly writing things like "he DONE well" instead of "he DID well". I think it is a poor reflection on our education system if people leave school without a proper command of the English language. By the way, I too worked all of my life, but am now enjoying retirement living in Turkey. For my sins, I am a Tottenham supporter.

  4. Enough is enough, the FA should be looking at other things affecting the game. What are they trying to prove. Punish divers, violent behaviour by players not checked at the time should be dealt with by the FA after the game. Referees replaced if need be when they have not taken the appropriate decisions or actions on incidents of importance and they openly ignore the linesmen.etc.etc. The FA only cares for their wage packet and perks. Perhaps its time to modernise this aspect of the football world and replace the FA with a better working structure, one that will serve the players the clubs and the fans, the ones that keeps football alive.Leave Tevez alone.

  11. Bad grammar & bad language aside, what is appalling is how this saga has been allowed to carry on for so long and eventually the only people who will suffer are the fans (as always).
Why can't the FA and PL just sort it out once and for all so that even if we do get deducted points we still have a chance to make them up. Don't wait until the end of the season to do it and then take them away!
And you so called Sheffield United SYMPATHISERS, how can you call yourselves football supporters when we all play and support football for the same reason and that is for the love of the game.
Surely, the world of football would have a better reputation if people like you only stopped to realise that you are only bringing this game we all love down to the lowest level possible. Yes, West Ham were wrong and have paid a HUGE fine (a world record in fact). All I can say is that English Football is being run by people who really don't care about football anymore. The only thing they care about is their back pockets. Go ahead, fine us £30 million, deduct 15 points but you will only be punishing football as it will leave the door open for more sagas like this.
The Hammers and infact any team are bigger than fines and point deductions! Hammers will always bounce back, thats what clubs with character do!

From George, on Thu 8 Jan 10:56PM
  12. "Surely you can't be punished twice for the same crime?"

They are not investigating the "same" crime. They are investigating other possible transgressions of the rules.

Its all quite clear in the article for those who bother to read it properly.

  13. Yes, gustavogambit, poor Teves's career is suffering and he will only get paid £100,000 a week instead of £150,000 a week ...... poor guy. Oh, I do feel sorry for him, and for his sake this whole fiasco must stop ... and not raise it's ugly head again. He is suffering and so is his career. Infact, just to make sure no one else suffers in this appalling manner .... just let anything happen, and don't worry about it.

  15. For how long will the FA conduct this silly investigation that seems to be heading no where? This headline is beginning to sound boring if not irritating. It is just reasonable that Alex Ferggie had been avoiding to hand contract extension to Tevez while the saga's still on. The FA should stop show boating with the issue. While they conduct this never-ending scheme, poor Tevez's career is suffering.

  16. Kenneth M ... Is their grammar appalling, is it 'appalling because they don't have a command of the English language'. I sense a slight ambiguity in what you wrote and I would like clarification, please.

  17. NO WORRIES PEOPLE, IF WEST HAM GET A POINTS DEDUCTION ANOTHER FINE AND GO DOWN? THEY WILL STILL BOUNCE BACK!! AND P--S THE CHAMPIONSHIP!!!! CAUSE WEST HAM HAVE TALENT PLAYING IN THE LOWER LEAGUES ALREADY, (YOUNG PLAYERS ON LOAN)THEY WILL ALWAYS PRODUCE TALENT AND SURVIVE BECAUSE THEY HAVE ONE OF THE BEST TALENTED ACADAMYS!!!! AND THEY HAVE A VERY BIG FANBASE!!!! COME ON YOU IRONS!!!!!!!

    From grahammiller1950, on Thu 8 Jan 10:02PM
  18. Why is it that so many people who comment on these football articles a) cannot spell and b) do not have a command of the English language as their grammar is appalling. It doesn't say much for our education system!

From Kenneth M, on Thu 8 Jan 9:56PM
  19. And if West Ham had been relegated they would still be in the Championship ....."it's as simple as that".
