Premier League - Ronaldo unhurt in Ferrari crash

Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo walked away unscathed despite writing off his £200,000 Ferrari 599 GTP Fiorano in a spectacular car crash near Manchester airport.

His luxury sports car's front end was smashed to pieces and it lost a wheel as he collided with a roadside barrier while driving to training, the morning after a disappointing defeat for his team.

Ronaldo's team-mate Edwin van der Sar, United's goakeeper, was following in his Bentley at the time of the crash but was not involved in the collision, said police.

Skid marks were clearly visible leading up to the crash scene, and a photographer who arrived shortly afterwards described the 23-year-old Portugal winger's bright-red car as a "terrible mess."

But Greater Manchester Police said no one had been injured.

"Officers attended and discovered a Ferrari had collided with a barrier," a statement said. "No one is believed to have been injured."

Witness Jody Lomax was driving behind Ronaldo when the collision occurred.

"The Ferrari went straight into the wall, his front left-hand wheel came off and then Ronaldo got out of the car," he said, according to the BBC.

"I was shocked. Anyway he was all right, he was walking - he was a bit shaken... Obviously I was stunned at seeing a Ferrari go in the wall and seeing Ronaldo."

A spokeswoman for United said Ronaldo, the World Player of the Year, had not required treatment for shock or any other injuries and would be fit to play in Sunday's Premier League showdown with Chelsea.

"Cristiano is fine," the spokeswoman said. "It was on his way to training. He did not receive any treatment. He has trained this morning with the team and is OK."

Police officer Nigel Snell said that, given the damage to the car, it was "fortunate" that Ronaldo was not injured.

"We are trying to establish exactly what happened and I would appeal to anyone that may have witnessed the collision to contact police," he said.

Ronaldo played as a second-half substitute in United's 1-0 defeat away to Derby County in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final on Wednesday.

Barring any delayed reaction to the crash, he will be back in the starting line-up for Sunday's match at Old Trafford as United seek to overcome one of their major rivals in the battle to retain the Premier League trophy.

  5. People should stop being jealous, God created everyone with equal opportunities. Ronaldo's gift is football. We have professors, doctors and business guys that are richer than Ron. It was an accident and could happen to anybody. This is not football issue, but concerns life. What I will tell Ronaldo is to thank God for saving him and he should put God first in all his endeavour.

  9. I can't believe that people instantly jump on the band wagon and wish ill on the lad, whoever he may be, because of a lucky escape from a what could have been a nasty car crash. Sick mentality and jealous spite combined I think. Nowhere in the article does it state he was speeding or under the influence and yet people jump to the conclusion. Who here has never taken a corner badly or skidded on some ice, do that in a Ferrari and you'll have a nasty surprise. I'm glad he's okay on a HUMAN level.

  13. Here's how I see this.....
    Ronaldo is paid a huge salary. Whether it's justifiable or not, there it is. If you or I were offered the same money to play football, we'd say " Thank you very much," and take it. Therefore, if it's OK for us, then it's OK for him.
    You can bet your @#$% that if I earned as much as Ronaldo, I'd have a Ferrari too.....and a Bentley for the weekly trip to Sainsburys. Why not?
    I've had accidents in my time too. I've yet to write anything off, but I've had a few close calls.
    This is only news because it's a celebrity, and should be kept in perspective.
    If Ronaldo was speeding, I hope he receives the appropriate punishment.
    We all just need to pause for a moment, be grateful no one was hurt.....and then move on.

  17. I'm a Liverpool fan and I'm just glad he isn't hurt seriously. It will be a big blow not only to Man Utd but also to the Premiership if something happens to him. He lights up the game with his dazzling skills and it will be a terrible thing if he had been injured seriouly.
