Season 2009 - Renault fail 2009 crash test

Eurosport - Fri, 09 Jan 21:20:00 2009

Renault's 2009 Formula One car has failed a mandatory crash test but the launch of the R29 will proceed as planned later this month.

"We have identified the problem and solved it," said a team spokesperson, before refusing to give any more details about the issue. Unconfirmed reports suggest that the car was believed to have failed nose and side impact tests, with one chassis seriously damaged.

"We will be able to run the car as planned in Portugal."

The R29 car is due to be launched before a regular test session at the new Portimao circuit in southern Portugal on Janauary 19.

Crash test failures are not unusual in Formula One, with teams pushing their designs to the limit.

Renault also failed one before the start of the 2005 season that brought them their first championship with Spain's Fernando Alonso, and have plenty of time to rectify the problem.

The team won two races with the double world champion last year and aim to be back in the hunt for the title when the season starts in Australia on March 29.

  1. Whoa Ginger Gitt, I think Senna was much more of a primadonna than Prost ever was.

  6. Shelby: Not all successful drivers become primadonnas. While Alonso has, and before him Prost did, and you could argue his "must win" clause made Schumi one. You can't say Hakkinen was, or Mansell or Senna. So the question is what pairing would you have prefered from the past - Prost and Patrese, or Senna and Mansell? You can show the primadonnas the door and still win championships.

  7. Slim, nobody expected anything from Hamilton until 2010! I even remember Ron saying before Melbourne 2007 he has to keep his head down for two or three years and try not to crash too much.

  8. ginger_gitt : i believe that first of all you would have to have a standard by which to judge . In a perfect car Jacques Villeneuve shone brightly but he failed miserably against miserable cars with drivers not perceived to be as good as Jacques.Without a way to rate drivers equally the rest becomes perception.

  9. ginger gitt. yeah' i realise that and also the possibility that he can do all the grunt work testing and so on makes sense but the quality of the driving i've seen from him is sometimes so bad that surely old flav' would be better off taking his chances with a new driver and should he prove worth his weight in momo steering wheels will be brought into the briatore management stable and sold on.

i guess i just don't get it with piquet at all. especially the stropping. that would make my blood boil and i'd run him down the road purely on the basis he was trashing my motorhome (if you like) because in effect he couldn't cut the mustard. prima donnadom would be scarce in my team...as would podiums i guess !!!

  11. Its a shame that Piquet (or any other driver for that mattter) can be mediocre* and still get a decent race seat, when quality drivers (whether new or old) can't get the seats the deserve.

    * = I use the term mediocre in measurement against other F1 drivers like Alonso, Hamilton, Raikkonen or Vettel. I think we need to make it clear that he isn't mediocre in comparison to us mortals as I'm pretty sure he can do better than any of us, even if he is a long way behind his peers.

  12. Rabbit: did anyone really believe that Lewis would walk right in and tip the apple cart as you say . If so , why did McLarens even hire Alonso in the first place unless they were buying up the competition so to speak. F1 is a funny world and no one really knows how it will unfold

From slimj, on Sat 10 Jan 5:05PM
  13. Slim- Probably both I would imagine. When his seat was announced for 2007 a lot of people pointed on the moves up the motorsport ladders weren't exactly based on his results, with a couple even openly saying he traded on his name and his Dad's money. But you can also bet 100% he kept his seat because he wasn't going to upset Alonso's apple cart!

  14. not often you see the words "piquet" & "talent" in the same sentence :=))

  15. Marion why do you keep repeating yourself? I used to enjoy your humour but you havent posted anything new for ages. Come on my witty Peruvian give us somthing fresh.

  16. Ginger Gitt, you're right but they do need a quality back up man to the "sainted" Fernando and Piquet definately isn't it. I was disappointed Renault re-appointed him in preference to a good rookie, but maybe the "star" vetoed that after his traumas last time. Shame because there are some good youngsters knocking on the doors.

From owen gayer, on Sat 10 Jan 4:21PM
  17. ginger_gitt : I would think that the Piquet name has more to do with being in the seat then talent.

  19. Shelby: The fact that Piquet isn't as good as Lewis in comparison to Fernando could be why he's still got a seat next season. If he'd been able to keep up with or even beat Alonso Renault may have shown him the door.
