FA Cup - Managers: Stevenage 'aimed for 5-0'
Stevenage boss Graham Westley reveals his masterplan for beating Newcastle United in the best of the reactio to the FA Cup third round ties.
STEVENAGE 3-1 NEWCASTLE UNITED
Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew: "The physical side of Stevenage's game was a problem for us all night. I can only say we are sorry for the result and for the performance because it was the performance level which was the problem. We were running on empty. It's been such a tough sequence of games. The team was a shadow of the team which played at Wigan and West Ham. Our energy level just couldn't match theirs. In both boxes we got dominated. The team looked tired. We had some key players missing through injury but I played the strongest team I could."
Stevenage manager Graham Westley: “I think the lads deserved what they got tonight. They played the game on the front foot and probably played the better football over the 90 minutes and it was good to see the three goals. Most of our thoughts today were about how we were going to win 5-0. It may sound daft but I said to them that if they can work out how to win 5-0, winning one nil is 20 per cent of that and they went into the game with that plan – how we were going to play on the front foot, score goals and we did a little bit more than 20 per cent of that."
BLACKBURN 1-0 QPR
Blackburn manager Steve Kean (on Ronaldinho): "I think that looks like that is dead in the water. It looks like he is going to go back to Brazil. We followed that right through as much as we could, but it looked like it was on the back foot, then it came alive and now it is totally finished now from what I've been told.We felt as though it could have been one of those games where we got many chances early on and each time you miss it gives the opposition a little bit of confidence. Fortunately enough Junior Hoilett popped up with a good goal, rounding off a good display."
QPR manager Neil Warnock (on the incident in which Jamie Mackie's leg was broken): "He's broken both bones, his tibia and his fibula, and he's gone to hospital, but will travel home with us. The lads were furious with El-Hadji Diouf; he (Mackie) had broken his leg and he is calling him all sorts on the pitch. There was no need to put the finger up and call him a disgrace and even the Blackburn people were embarrassed. I can't abide people like that, I don't know why he wants to take on the world every week. For many years I have thought he (Diouf) was the gutter type - I was going to call him a sewer rat, but that might be insulting to sewer rats. He's the lowest of the low and I can't see him being at Blackburn much longer."
ARSENAL 1-1 LEEDS UNITED
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger: "I must say at first that it was a very difficult game because it was a real cup game and Leeds were up for it, they played well. It was the kind of game where you felt that it was important not to go 1-0 down. When we were 1-0 down I felt that Wojciech [Szczesny] kept us in the game with a good save from [Luciano] Becchio's header. We looked like we would come back, but we were short of time and it was important to keep the momentum and not to go out because that would have been a shocker. Even when we equalised we still had three chances at 1-1, but we couldn't take them. At least we are still in the Cup and hopefully we can do it at Leeds."
Leeds manager Simon Grayson: "Obviously it is tinged with a bit of disappointment because we were minutes away from pulling off a famous result. I said to the players beforehand to just do themselves and the fans proud and they have walked off the pitch having done that. Individuals have done well but any success we have had in the past and will do in the future is about us as a team collectively. Arsenal are a fantastic football club and it is testament to our players they have had to bring on Fabregas and Walcott to try to win the game. There are many teams who come here and have been on the end of a hiding. We have done well for ourselves and will approach the replay with the same attitude."
SUNDERLAND 1-2 NOTTS COUNTY
Sunderland manager Steve Bruce: "Certainly by looking at what we have just witnessed with six or seven missing, we simply aren't good enough. With six or seven [out], we simply couldn't handle it, so that's the disappointing thing for me. People who have been knocking on my door wanting a game were, unfortunately today, found sadly wanting. I'm not going to try to make excuses; that would be unfair on Notts County. We have to accept that we were nowhere near good enough. Simply on the day, we didn't perform well enough, and when you perform like that and you are lacklustre like we were, then we got exactly what we deserved. We got our backsides kicked, and rightly so."
BURTON 2-1 MIDDLESBROUGH
Burton manager Paul Peschisolido: "I feel fantastic, but if you'd have asked going into the last 10 minutes of the game I wouldn't have said so. I actually thought we were terrible. We just didn't perform. Defensively we were solid, but on the ball it was a shambles at times. I'm amazed we've won the game, and maybe this will be a turning point for our season. Obviously, I'm absolutely overjoyed that we've got through. It's a fantastic result for the club and the fans. Perhaps we didn't deserve it, but I'm not complaining because we're in the hat for the next round - and that's unbelievable."
Middlesbrough manager Tony Mowbray: "Last-minute goals are killing us. It happened at Elland Road last weekend and it's happened again here. If we could have taken a better share of our chances it wouldn't really have mattered. They wouldn't have gambled like they did because they would have been two or three goals down and out of it. But when a team is only one goal down, they'll always put you under pressure in the last few minutes. It's another example of one goal never being enough. I don't even think it was a case of them putting us under any sort of pressure. It was just two isolated incidents."
SCUNTHORPE 1-5 EVERTON
Scunthorpe manager Ian Baraclough (on Jermaine Beckford): "He looked bright and didn't look out of place in their team. I just hope he can prove himself to be a good striker at that level, because he is a good striker. It is all about confidence. Jermaine could have gone in there thinking it is all too much for him but it certainly isn't. I'm pleased for him. I'm disappointed he scored, obviously, but he is a good kid and deserves success."
Everton assistant manager Steve Round (on Beckford): "Jermaine is really finding his feet in the Premier League. He scored again and that was very pleasing. We know he can score goals, he is a really good finisher. He has now got a goal, he was threatening the other night and we are really pleased with his progress."
SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-3 MIDDLESBROUGH
Sheffield United manager Micky Adams: "We have got to be pleased that we lost the game with our boots on rather than rolled over and let it be a walkover. In the second half we were terrific. I told the boys at half-time that Villa will be thinking the game's won and what we needed to was get a bit closer to them and squeeze up and it worked. It's natural for defenders to drop off and not get too close because pace can be a problem but the first goal disappointed me. He ran an awful long way and no one has come and confronted him. We just can't giving teams goal starts."
Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier: "It was a typical cup-tie where at times we could play football, at times where we had to withstand the pressure and defend. Probably the game could have been put to bed a bit earlier but the third goal was a good relief at the end. All the players were terrific - it was not easy. We haven't had the results we wanted in the league and it's never easy away at Sheffield United."
READING 1-0 WEST BROMWICH ALBION
Reading manager Brian McDermott (on goalscorer Shane Long): "I know this will bring more attention on Shane but as far as I am concerned he is staying. I have a great relationship with him and now he is getting rewards for his hard work. He is a great character and the goals are coming. I fielded a strong team because my priority is to win whatever the competition."
West Bromwich Albion manager Eddie Newton: "It was not a great performance but it wasn't bad. We still created chances, but we switched off and paid the price for it. Ishmael Miller could have had a penalty and he had a goal ruled out so we had some bad luck. It is not going well for us at the moment."
BOLTON 2-0 YORK
Bolton manager Owen Coyle: "I said, `You'd better get your act together'," he explained. "Because the way my team play we're not good enough at this stage of our development to think we can flick a switch and play at any given time. We have to play on the front foot with a real intensity for the whole duration of a match. Any less then we're always going to find difficult moments in a game, no matter who we play. We didn't have enough intensity in the first half. The introduction of Kevin Davies gave everyone a lift and when you're able to bring Matty (Taylor) and Johan into the fray you know there's real quality on the ball, and so it proved."
York manager Gary Mills: "I'm gutted but proud of my team today. The players kept going and I thought we were superb. We've been playing well in the league, and I told the players all week and today that I didn't want anything else, just for them to go out and play the way we have been. We haven't changed our shape for Bolton, we haven't changed the way we play, and we came very close, didn't we? We had the chance just before they scored. I'm gutted for everybody, but for me there's a lot of positives there, we're moving forward and starting to play well. I think anybody who was at the game today would say the least we deserved was a draw."
SOUTHAMPTON 2-0 BLACKPOOL
Southampton manager Nigel Adkins: "I thought it was a good game of football. Is it an upset? Well it was a Premiership team we just went and played. They made changes to their starting 11 and we made eight changes from the last team we played in the Football League, so both squads have been utilised and I was delighted we set about ourselves against an exceptionally good team who have been magnificent for football. We are delighted to be in the hat for the fourth round which is great for the supporters."
Blackpool manager Ian Holloway: “It’s an unbelievable turnaround to have their fans singing ‘Premier League, you’re having a laugh’ at us. Well, I am having a laugh. I am loving every minute of it because my team has earned the right to be there. I don’t think they should be quite so disrespectful, maybe they’re a little bit jealous of the fact a little club like Blackpool can do it and Southampton have fallen from grace.”

5-0 don't be silly you little man enjoy the win and dont make a fool of yourself are you on the wackey backey.
Mackie got what he desevered after his display in the game against Watford
the bubble has burst for pardew, now you newcastle fans are about to see how hopeless a manager he really is, he cannot handle pressure when things are not going his teams way and has a history of letting rot settle in when the defeats start
Paperboy, spot on son, whos gonna buy Ferdinand, some championship side? Da Silva , Angelieri, Riveros, what about them? supposedly world class players , not even good enough to make the squad up!!
Brucie bought them !!
Pardew, pardew, pardew, pardew,pardew, pardew
We can't stay in the Premier League with you, with you
So here's your cards and that's the way out
We're much better with you gone there's no doubt, no doubt!
Well done Stevenage we were c**p, looks like ill have to cancel my hotel in may......
Amazing that Middlesbrough fielded two sides in the FA Cup. One lost to Burton 2 - 0 while the other one defeated Scunthorpe 3 - 1. Also they got two different managers. Maybe they can jointly present one team for the next round. All these happened on Yahoo Eurosport anyway. Lol
If Bruce thinks the players who were 'knocking on his door' just weren't good enough, he should take another look at the moron he keeps putting into the middle of defence, and who he gave the captain's armband to on Saturday. Ferdy can't defend to save his skin - a family trait, I think. So perhaps SB will do the club a favour and sell him. I hear they're short of donkeys on the beach at Blackpool!
just face it toon town we done you lol....revenge for 98
How the hell can pardew say that " we ran out of energy" strewth your a prem team no second thoughts your not go back to the championship where you belong an its dave from wooler if anyone wants a go
Dramatic Housing Downturn
Large areas of the North East and Midlands have seen property prices plummet due to an unexpected rise in domestic violence including destroyed kitchens and bathrooms and a surprising number of kicked domestic animals, especially cats.
Newcastle, Middlesboro, Sunderland, Blackpool and West Bromwich police were on overtime tonight as were areas of London.
Authorities in Liverpool were said to be quite calm before tomorrow's anticipated spread of regional unrest .
A local M.P. said that house prices would remain stable ( having bottomed out in 1973) and that domestic violence towards animals that taste like chicken was being absorbed by KKFC ( King Kenny's Football Club).
And they said the FA Cup was dead !
