Euro 2012 - Paper Round: Slow news day? Not on your nelly...

Thu, 09 Feb 08:54:00 2012

Paper Round apologises, but nothing really seems to have happened in the football world recently and so today's papers do not have anything of note to report.

The Sun Rednapp Capello - 0

Naturally, PR is joking: the separate yet intricately linked Harry Redknapp and Fabio Capello stories have exploded across the front and back pages of both the quality and the tabloid newspapers.

Here are the main headlines and some of the comments by the top journalists after an astonishing day in England football.

++

The Sun: 'Arryvederci

Steven Howard: After being paid £24 million in four years, you might have thought Fabio Capello might have learned the language. But he couldn't even do that. Though he did have enough grasp of the swear words to sit yelling at his players from the bench in South Africa. The clearest sign that he had totally lost the plot. He stared out at his players from behind his glasses not knowing what to do and looking to all the world like Mr Magoo.

++

The Guardian: Capello out, Redknapp in?

Richard Williams: Fabio Capello never bothered to learn much English, or much about England. His £6m a year was not enough to interest him greatly in the culture of the country whose national game he was hired to revive by winning a major international tournament. On Wednesday night his lack of understanding led directly to his resignation from the job of England manager, after a meeting in which he was confronted over his refusal to accept the stripping of the England captaincy from John Terry.

++

The Telegraph: The choice is clear: it has to be Harry

Henry Winter: Light the beacons across the land, let the church bells ring out with joy and record in the annals of history that Fabio Capello’s final decision as England manager proved to be his best. England were stagnating. On his watch. On £6 million a year. It was time for Capello to go. It’s time for the FA to go for Harry Redknapp.

++

The Times: England expects

Simon Barnes: Harry Redknapp got up yesterday wondering if he was going to jail. He went to bed wondering if he was going to be the England manager. It is not so much football, bloody hell as real life, bloody hell. Football has become as freakishly unpredictable off the pitch as it always has been when the ball is in play.

++

The Express: Gone – Capello quits over Terry race affair

John Dillon: It has been so joyless and miserable following the England team for so long that the ability to summon up any kind of excitement on the pitch ought now to be the main qualification for the job. Now that Redknapp is in prime position to replace Fabio Capello – who last night resigned from his post as manager of England after a long meeting with the FA – who could deny that, at the very least, he would make England consistently more interesting, attractive and vibrant than they have been for a long, long time?

++

The Daily Mail: Bitter End – Capello quits after blazing row with FA over Terry

Martin Samuel: Why would Redknapp embrace this chaos? Why would he, given his recent circumstances, regard the FA as suitable employers?  This is a man who has just endured a five-year investigation, culminating in a very public trial for tax evasion. Acquitted on all charges, he stood on the steps of Southwark Crown Court and paid generous tribute to the executive staff of Tottenham Hotspur

++

Daily Mirror: Fab Bonus for 'Arry

Martin Lipton: Gone, with a flounce dressed up a principle, and a reduced pay-off. Gone, without any regrets. On either side. And gone, in truth, far too late, at least two years after he should have left. An overdue departure for a man who ran out of love with the job long before he ran out of love with the money, the £24 million or so he has banked since January 2008.

++

Daily Star: Harry free as Fabio flees

Brian Woolnough: He had to go and it's the best thing to happen to English football since England won the World Cup. Now the FA must replace Fabio Capello with Harry Redknapp. Immediately. Today if they can.

++

The Independent: A day of two halves

Sam Wallace: There are many reasons to be disillusioned with the state of English football. The lack of home-grown players coming through. The distance the country lags behind countries such as Spain in producing high-quality, technically accomplished players. But to quit over the FA taking a stand that it was inappropriate for the England team to be led by a man on a charge of racial abuse is a pathetic waste.

  1. Capello did the right thing. The manager is the boss or he isn't. England will never win anything with these clowns sitting on the sidelines interfering. Redknapp would be mad to destroy his career with these clowns.

  4. England will never win anything unless our football culture is changed .in premier league now with foreign input we are starting to play football like rest of world do. only then will we progress and have a manager who understands how to play.the likes of shearer hanson lawrenson who only seem to understand how they played football and coach the same way ie, press the ball push up dont defend deep etc. all losing methods.cappello not right for job.rednapp is not either we need a forwards thinking young manager give him time to start afresh.The fa also need to sort there act out and get some consistency to there decisions.

  5. To me, while I can see why the F.A. dispensed of Mr Capello's services because the matter is an internal F.A. matter, not any business of the public, I do also believe that the F.A. was wrong in sacking Terry as captain of the England team.
    I think like this because the core principle behind the British justice system is that the accused is innocent until a jury finds him guilty and the F.A.'s action may make those jurors think that he must be guilty if the F.A. have sacked him and he will, therefore, not have a fair trial.
    I hope Terry sues the F.A. for not waiting till the trial is over and for possibly damaging his trial outcome.

  6. Arsenal team November 1990 : Seaman, Dixon, Bould, Adams, Winterburn, Rocastle, Thomas, Davis, Limpar, Merson, Smith.

    November 2011 : Szczesny, Djourou, Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Andre Santos, Song, Ramsey, Arteta, Walcott, van Persie, Arshavin

    Gooners, I'm not getting at you. So, before you start venting your spleens, I'm just using you to illustrate the broad picture........ to show the main reason as to why England will NEVER win anything. I could have picked any premiership team, but Arsenal have probably been the protagonist 'foreign legion' team for several years.

  7. The English press have at long last got their wish,most of them going as far as saying Capello did not bother learning the language but they fully understood whatever he said in English at his press conferences.Non of them have bothered to say anything about the previous English managers record at managing England and that the last one did not even manage to qualify England for Euro 2008.They delude themselves that they have world class players who are destined to win the world cup and that the only thing they need is an English manager to make it happen

  8. thats four yrs & 24 million the FA have wasted & England are still no nearer winning anything how much more money are thy gonna waste on the next manager 'Terry ' is yet anougher player who thinks hes bigger than the whole England set up amids long line of players over the yrs & until the FA realise that England are never gonna win anything

  9. Is Harry Redknapp the right man for the job? Im sure if the FA tried to tell him what to do, he will tell them where stick their job. I think he will be happier to stay with Spurs.

    I too abhor the percentage of foreign players in the Premiership. Bloody ludicrous. And most of them are no better or no worse than British players. We just have a passing fad that foreign players, managers and owners are considered, by definition, better than British ones. Hopefully the bubble will burst soon and we'll realise that it was never true.
    But the point is that the foreign players come to the Prmeiership and are obliged to play a style of game that is different to what they are used to everywhere else in the world. Some adapt to it and some don't, but it is, undeniably, a game that is faster, more intense and more physical than the game played anywhere else.
    And if the rest of the world struggles to adapt to the English style of football, why don't we use that fact instead of trying (and generally failing) to play them at their own game?
    Let THEM struggle to cope with us rather than the other way round.

    You say "in premier league now with foreign input we are starting to play football like rest of world do".
    It has always struck me as odd that everybody who expresses an opinion on football agrees that English football is the best in the world. Foreign players who come into the Premier League take a lot of time to adapt to it; many never do and skulk off back to where they came from.
    But instead of taking this English football out there and playing our own way when we go to World Cups etcetera, we appoint foreign managers to the England team and send the players out to try and do what the rest of the world do.
    Madness. Sod trying to play like the rest of the world do.
    If the pace and physicality etc of English football is difficult for foreigners to cope with, why on earth don't England play that way and stick it up 'em.

  17. typical tabloid news they have slaged capello down more or less since he was given the job now they are slagging him cause he had the guts to say he manage the team not the commitee, it should have been the commitee that went after not capello he had more b====s than these reporters put together

    From John B, on Thu 9 Feb 20:24
  18. I would expect the media to turn on Harry Red as soon as it looks like he does not have the tactical ability, which i don't think he does. Then he would walk.
    I think the best England could hope for in a temp coach to take them through the summer, Wenger would be a good start.

    From JLC, on Thu 9 Feb 20:17
  19. Paul Parker for England. We want an All Black squad.

    From Morty, on Thu 9 Feb 20:13
  20. In our view there are plenty of players in the Prem and at a push even the Championship, that could come in to the England squard and make far more of an impact than the current lot.

    All this talk about the Manager being at fault is pure tosh, he will give the players the tools and the direction on how he wants them to play but if they do not listen and do their own thing what can he do.
    I think that there has got to be some outside influance on the manager, why else would players be picked when they are in poor form or just came back from injury.

    Look at the likes of the players at Norwich, Swansea in our eyes they are playing out of their skins and making some of the so called England (players) big guns look a little less then top draw.

    A big shake up is needed within the squad, but all fabio was trying to do was stick up for his Capt so i think he had his heart in the right place, regardless of our views as at the end of the day thats what you need your boss going into bat for you.
