Euro 2012 - Reaction to Capello's resignation

Thu, 09 Feb 09:05:00 2012

The world of football was quick to react to the resignation of Fabio Capello as England manager.

2011 England Fabio Capello - 0

"I think we need an English manager now, we don't need anything else lost in translation....Harry Redknapp would be my choice by a distance." - Rio Ferdinand

"Gutted Capello has quit. Good guy and top coach. Got to be English to replace him. Harry Redknapp for me." - Wayne Rooney

"Shocked about news on Fabio Capello...gutted to be honest, gave me my 1st cap and believed in me! Thank you Mr Capello! #GreatManager. People have their own judgement on Capello but for a young player who was given the chance to play for my country at such a young age... He has shown great belief and trust in me so I can only thank him....massive influence on my career so far! Sad to see him go!" - Jack Wilshere

"Surely we will stick to an Englishman as our next manager. And that should run right through the squad from players to tea lady IMO. Don't know if was just me but it never felt right in the first place knowing the England Manager was heading off after the Euros regardless. Ever been such a strong public opinion when it comes to naming the next England manager? I don't know anyone that doesn't want Redknapp." - Michael Owen

"When any manager comes out like [Capello] did at the weekend there is going to be conflict. What will happen in the next few weeks and months is players will come out with their feelings. When they're playing for a manager they all speak very highly of him but they sometimes change their stance in the weeks and months that follow. I don't think any of us were expecting this today." - FA head of elite development Gareth Southgate

"I don't think we've been left in a mess by Capello's resignation. Quite the opposite - I think it's a positive... From where I sit (Harry Redknapp) isn't just the best replacement, he's the only option." - Gary Neville

"I'm shocked and I'm amazed. Let's face it, we had an England manager who was taking a team into the European Championship in three or four months' time and had a decent chance of being successful. We don't know what has been said and done behind closed doors but the FA took swift and decisive action in the John Terry case. I agreed with that decision but we know that Fabio Capello didn't agree with it... I've always said that England should be managed by an Englishman, it's my big belief and I would go along with Harry Redknapp as the outstanding candidate. He's a genius at motivating players."- Alan Shearer

"I think the FA have handled this very badly. He's obviously decided enough's enough and walked out. He's almost dropped England right in it. There's an awful lot of preparation that has gone in it (Euro 2012). It just causes disruption. There will be speculation that people don't need." - Former England manager Danny Mills

"I'm quite delighted if I'm honest. I only saw them failing at the Euros with him in charge... It's a great opportunity for us to go and enjoy the Euros. We have to go and get Harry Redknapp. There's only one England game before the end of the season and Daniel Levy knows how much it would mean to Harry Redknapp. It's the pinnacle of his career. He is the only man for the job." - Former QPR manager Neil Warnock

"So Capello resigns... what now... " - Rio Ferdinand

"No captain and no manager. 4 months from a major championship. What's going on... Well, well, well, this debacle claims yet another victim. Where does this stop. #madness." - Joey Barton

"I think new man should be English. Players have to be, so should boss. HR the man if he wants it. He can do both jobs til May." - Gary Lineker

"Smooth successions are not something that comes with the England job. Fabio's time saw great qualifications, a poor World Cup and we will never know what could have been in the summer. After speaking to senior sources at the FA a) Fabio Capello resigned and b) the meeting was friendly and everyone handled themselves with great integrity and decorum. It's disappointing because it would be nice for an England manager to serve their term of duty." - Former FA chief Brian Barwick, who appointed Capello

"English football and the England national team has been through some dramas over the years. This is right up there with the biggest, but sometimes out of adversity you get people rallying to the cause and it brings the players together, and that will be job of the successor, whether that's Harry Redknapp or whoever else... Harry Redknapp is the odds on favourite there is not much doubt about that. There are other strong candidates, I would think Roy Hodgson is a very strong candidate, but there is momentum behind Harry Redknapp that I think the FA will find difficult to resist and Harry Redknapp himself may find irresistible." - Former FA chief David Davies

"This whole sequence of events has only happened because of the remarkable decision by the magistrate to delay the John Terry case until 9 July. Had that not happened, this would never have occurred. It drove a sequence which has led to Fabio Capello and the FA falling out... I would put Stuart Pearce in charge of the England team on a temporary basis. The FA must not take a knee-jerk response. Pearce has sat alongside Capello, he has seen it all first hand and it would be a good move until everyone takes stock." - John Motson

  3. Whatever the outcome, my view is the new England manager will be up against it. We just don't have enough players of quality to be successful on the world stage.

  4. I think it's outrageous that someone can lose his job simply because he said what he thought. It looks like they just want a yes man and I'm sure there'll be plenty of applicants. Whatever the rights and wrongs of the Terry case, he is still innocent until proven guilty and Fabio lost his job for saying that - at least that's what it looks like to me. It'll be another excuse when England start losing.

  5. well said Dean, this just shows what I have said all along the England players are an unmanagible bunch of never beens and never will be I hate to think what the next manager will face but total dissipline must be top of the list from day one any one who does not like it get the hell out.

  6. Being England Manager is like taking on the poisoned chalice. Soon as they don't get the right result your doomed. Have great respect for 'arry as you all refer to him.
Need to really sort out the whole structure. The english leauge have the greatest number of matches including all the cup competitions with out a break like this winter backlog of matches build up plus most of the top flight teams have a high level of overseas players so at the end of the season we have only a few top flight players completely knackered to then go onto world cup of other competitions (if we qualify)
do badly and all blame the manager. Let's not just change the manager let's also change our system and give them a chance when they go in to the finals refreshed and ready to be able to compete

  7. capello was a top man for the england job
he took the team and developed it to a side that beat the world champions
And then we let him go because he voiced a legitimate opinion.
    The FA are idiots
wish you all the best for the future Mr Capello

  9. Any foolish guy who is managing a top 5 Premier League side now and decides to quit for England will rue that decision after Euro 2012. England players are a bunch of Lazy, spoiled, immoral, fornicators, adulterers & gamblers who will bring down any well meaning coach. - Ngala, Kenya.

From Kenya where we do better to run rather than chasing a single ball the 22 of us for , England is a disgrace in international soccer. With the richest/strongest League, you cant win the Euro any more times than Greece or the world cup any more than poverty stricken Brazil. Remove the turf on your silly Disney type stadiums and plant maize. idiots!

  11. I agree with comment 119, stay put harry cos everybody media and all will tear you to pieces at the 1st opportunity and i think, maybe not this year but certainly in the next couple of years you could win the title with what is a very good spurs side that are only going to get better!!

  12. Bottom line, the FA wanted rid of Capello in plenty of time before the Euros.Knowing the guy's personality they cleverly engineered a scenario which would force him to resign rather than sack him. Just lookj at their body language on tv they were delighted with the outcome. Hope Harry, his family and friends have a pristine past or the muckrakers we call a press will crucify him.

  13. If Capello is not good enough to lead England to Europe 2012 championship, my advice is try an African coach. I am sure he is better than any English man at the moment.

  14. What's going on in here? Yahoo, you guys should've given Capello a fair shake and not reactions from people who have beef with Capello! Michael Owen still hates Capello from his days in Real Madrid lol. Capello was always right about Owen, a bunch warmer! With HR, or the special one, or even SAF, England will never achieve an international success, because as a manager you want talents to work with, and England just does not have it! Capello is not the one to be blamed, blame the lack of talented youngsters, and hungry players with true grit.

From Nabil, on Fri 10 Feb 11:27
  15. Now we`v got rid of Capello who could not be bothered to learn to speak english;[ If i was on 6 million a year id learn it in a week] We should now get rid of John Terry he`s trouble ever since the Wayne Bridge affair more problems regarding Mr Terry have come to light.and now the court case John Terry is a nasty peice of work and should never be selected to play for england again He is part of Englands problem and always will be; He should now do us all a favour and retire from international football before he causes any more problems; His days at chelsea are numberd as well. What manager in thier right mind is going to sign him after his contract is up at Stamford Bridge; Harry. Rednapp is the best english manager we`v got if he gets the job he will be on a hiding to nothing;

  17. Big disgrace! So no single Englishman out of the 69million is qualified to coach your national team. You have to depend on other nationality to coach your national team. Hope all the men in this nation should reflect on this national weakness. France as a french national coach, Germany as a German national Coach, Italy as an Italian national coach. Hope England will have same trust, believe and confidence in their citizen.
