Britain's Bradley Smith suffered disappointment at the Qatar 125cc Grand Prix, missing out on the points following mechanical trouble, while Scott Redding (pictured) impressed.
The Oxfordshire rider started from pole position but slipped to 16th in a race won by Spain's Sergio Gadea from countryman Joan Olive and German Stefan Bradl.
There was better news for British fans as 15-year-old Redding finished fifth after running with the leading pack throughout, with compatriot Danny Webb claiming sixth.
Reigning champion Gabor Talmasci started strongly and took the lead on lap three following Smith's problems, but suffered engine failure of his own and trailed back to 12th.
A seven-man leading group provided close wheel-to-wheel action, and it was unsurprising to see contact as Raffaele de Rosa ran into the back of Olive, who somehow stayed upright. There was no such luck for the Italian, who slid out of contention.
Redding looked in contention for a podium finish going into the final lap, but Gadea stretched clear - making light of a collarbone injury.
On the final straight Bradl overhauled the Briton and Mike Di Meglio to claim third place seemingly from nowhere.
