Downing eyes up possible signings

Cheltenham manager Keith Downing insists any young players who arrive in the summer will have to be ready to be thrown straight into his team.Downing used Tuesday's reserve game with Swindon to run the rule over Leeds pair Gavin Rothery and Simon Madden, Sunderland winger Billy Dennehy, Coventry defender Liam Robinson and Manchester United striker Chris Fagan, and revealed he was pleased with some of the displays.

However, the Robins boss admits he is on the lookout for players who can immediately strengthen his first-team squad rather than prospects that need nurturing.

"There were some impressive displays and Fagan took his goal very well," Downing told the Gloucestershire Echo.

"It'd be great to have the side that played to work with for two years, but the thinking of the club is now to have a 20 or 22-man squad and I can't have any doubts about throwing any of them into the first team."

He added: "It's just great to have a look at these lads and put Cheltenham in the frame and maybe have the opportunity to have them back. They have to be ready to be in my thoughts for the first game of next season."
