The former rugby league player joins a growing list of top New Zealand players to pledge the allegiances through to the next World Cup.

Captain Richie McCaw, goalkicking fly-half Dan Carter and backrower Rodney So'oialo have all committed to the All Blacks.

Thorn, who has spent most of the last decade switching between the two rugby codes, said he was keen to finish his career playing union in Christchurch.

"At this stage of my career I am really enjoying my footy and I'm keen to continue playing rugby for the Crusaders and the All Blacks," he said.
