Manchester City midfielder Vincent Kompany is ruled out of the UEFA Cup match against his former club Hamburg on Thursday because of a hamstring injury.
Kompany suffered the setback in the defeat by Arsenal at the weekend and has remained at home for treatment.
The Belgium international's absence leaves manager Mark Hughes short of numbers in that department as another former Hamburg star, Nigel De Jong, is cup-tied.
There is some good news for City, however, in the form of winger Martin Petrov, who could return for the match.
The Bulgarian has been missing since August after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury on international duty but came through a 45-minute appearance at Newcastle on Monday without a problem and will be included in the squad.
"The plan was to give him 45 minutes on Monday night," said Hughes.
"He came through that and looked impressive. You forget what quality he can produce and he looked in good nick.
"He was blowing a bit, which is fairly obvious given how long he has been out. But he is an option for us."
Wayne Bridge, Benjani Mwaruwari and Stephen Ireland will all travel to Germany, although Ireland seems highly unlikely to figure after sustaining a freak ankle injury in training last week.
However, at least having Petrov back offers Hughes another alternative in attack.
"When I came in as manager, the fact that Martin was available to me was a big plus," said Hughes.
"I had watched him from afar the year before and saw the quality he could produce. The opportunity to work with him was something I was looking forward to.
"Unfortunately we lost him very quickly, which was a big blow to us.
"When you see what he can produce you can see what we have lacked on occasion this season."
With Petrov available, Hughes will hope to ease some of the pressure on Robinho, who has not scored since his effort at Blackburn on December 28.

Keith, I also seem to remember Fergie coming up with the tactic of targetting SWP for rough treatment in the derby earlier this season, hence, four yellow cards for your scumbag players for fouling SWP! So even Fergie realises the threat he poses! You're just a thick c#@t not to notice this fact! Oh wait, you're a typical out-of-town red who doesn't understand football and has never kicked a ball in his life! Nevermind(!)
I discovered a hot place
------Meet rich C o M------ where many sexy singles- who like dating and-- chatting there. I'm an open- minded girl from US, I-- am Waiting 4 u
I seem to remember that SWP couldnt terrorise League 2 defenders in the Carling Cup when he played at Chelsea so why should he be any better in the EUFA Cup? Waste of space and certainly not an international class player....

In an ideal world a match-fit Petrov and SWP on either flanks would terrorise most full backs! Last season he was City's most consistant attacker but the team were a little imbalanced but with SWP now back at the club, City were be major threat. If he stays fit next season in my opinion, City can afford to sell Robinho, buy a world class striker with presence and revert to a 442 formation.
