Barron savours breakthrough

Fri 09 May, 04:15 PM

St Mirren youngster David Barron admits the season is drawing to a close too soon as he feels he has finally made the breakthrough at the club. The 20-year-old broke through from the youth ranks at Love Street into Gus MacPherson's side in December and has played 19 first team games.

While other players are beginning to think of their summer breaks as the season begins to wind down, Barron wishes he could continue playing.

He said: "I'm disappointed the season is now coming to an end because I've had a fair run of games in the team.

"It's coming to an end and that's unfortunate. I didn't expect to play as many games as I have done at the start of the season.

"I hoped to get a few games here and there but I've played more than I thought.

"So it is disappointing that the season is coming to an end but I've enjoyed it and I'm already looking forward to next season.

"My main aim was to get a chance in the team and show what I could do.

"But I've played 19 games this season and that's beyond what I thought I'd do."

St Mirren face the already relegated Gretna at Love Street on Saturday but Barron insists Saints will have no problems motivating themselves for the game as they have their sights set on finishing in ninth spot and know each game is crucial.

He said: "With games at the end of the season you need to be as professional as you an be, keep focused and motivate ourselves to get another three points and move up the table.

"We want to get the three points on Saturday and try to move above Inverness. The aim is to try and catch Inverness.

"If we finish in ninth place that would be great as it would show that the club is going somewhere. Then we could build on that for next season.

"Our main aim was to stay in the league and we've done that.

"Finishing in ninth place would be great for the club."
