Longchamp Brief For Classy Way

Fri 09 May, 04:09 PM

A decision on which Derby Thewayyouare will run in this summer will be made after he participates in the French 2000 Guineas at Longchamp this weekend.

The Andre Fabre-trained three-year-old won four of his five starts as a juvenile, culminating with a victory in the Criterium International at Saint-Cloud.

The Kingmambo colt had previously beaten John Gosden's subsequent Sandown Classic Trial winner Centennial in a Group Three event and is as low as 12-1 with Betfred for the Epsom Classic, for which he has been supplemented.

But with the French Derby also under consideration, a decision will be made after Sunday's French 2000 Guineas, for which he has been handed a troublesome draw in stall 15.

"The horse is fine - he's ready to go - but the only bad news we have had came this morning with the draw," said Herve Barjot, racing manager to the owner, Sean Mulryan.

"It is a big field and it is not a good draw for a race like the Guineas.

"He had the perfect season last year and we think he is a very nice nice. Andre Fabre has done a great job with him getting him ready for Sunday but it really depends which way the field will go.

"His breeding suggests he will get further than a mile and the plan is definitely to go for a Derby, but which one we will decide after Sunday.

"His form was boosted by Centennial so we hope he runs a good race."

Godolphin are also concerned by the draw for their number one contender Rio De La Plata, who was a Group One winner in France as a juvenile.

"We're expecting a good run from him but he's got a shocking draw," said Simon Crisford, Godolphin's racing manager.

"He's very solid, very honest, tries his best and he's got a great turn of foot and we'll know on Sunday how he did over the winter.

"He's developed physically very well and we are just very pleased with him, we hope he runs well," he told Channel 4 Racing.

Kerrin McEvoy has been rerouted from the Italian Derby to ride Il Warrd, Godolphin's second-string in the race.

It will be his first run for the stable since his transfer from Marcus Tregoning's yard, for whom he won the Easter Stakes on his first start this season.

"I'm excited to be riding Il Warrd in the French 2000 Guineas," McEvoy told Teletext.

"I was due to ride in the Italian Derby but my intended mount for Godolphin doesn't run so I'm now going to France.

"He started the season well by winning at Kempton. I've ridden him at home and he gives me a nice feel but obviously this is going to be his big test against horses like Rio De La Plata."
