Lions 2009 - Shanklin ruled out of Lions tour

Eurosport - Sat, 09 May 11:35:00 2009

Wales centre Tom Shanklin will miss the British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa after being ruled out of action for 16 weeks by his club.

Tom Shanklin - Cardiff Blues - 0

The 29-year-old (pictured) dislocated his right shoulder in Cardiff Blues' Magners League victory over Newport Gwent Dragons on Wednesday night and was immediately taken to hospital for an X-ray.

A further scan revealed the need for reconstructive surgery on the joint, and with the Lions heading for Africa in just 17 days' time, Shanklin's hopes of facing the Springboks are over.

Blues chief executive Robert Norster said: "I'm sure I can speak on behalf our the entire Blues family, indeed the entirety of Wales when I offer our sympathies to Tom following his devastating shoulder injury that will prevent him travelling with the Lions to South Africa this summer.

"Tom and all our other Lions heading south have given their very best for the Blues and their country this year and such injuries hardly seem fitting or fair.

"Suffice to say Tom picked up the injury whilst giving his all for our team and we are all feeling for him at this difficult time of disappointment and frustration."

The powerful midfielder walked gingerly off the Arms Park pitch with his right arm wrapped in his shirt late on in the 26-12 victory.

Shanklin, who had earlier scored a try, appeared to pop the joint as he crashed to the floor in contact.

He had been pencilled in for a possible place in the Lions Test side, when his physical presence would have been a potentially vital asset against the muscular Springboks.

His absence could now open the door for international team-mate Gavin Henson, although his chances are hampered by a lack of recent action.

  1. aw lads ye are a bit harsh..ye as a british nation would want to lighten up and stop acting like uptight british gimps..look its fact ye are a hated nation its not my fault

  2. i think everyone wants rid of orange2tuf or now jack cuz hes just gay

  3. Nah. I think orange changed his name because I reported his comments. I'll do it again to this 'jack' if he doesn't stop his insulting comments.

Not a Lewsy or Tindall fan, personally. I don't think they've been very good for their clubs or country (a couple of good games at the end of the season aren't enough). I wouldn't be surprised if McGeechan waits until the last minute to pick a replacement.

  4. hahaha, cant beleive you changed ur name just coz munster lost..
    pathetic
and you just ignored everything i said anyway.
Roberts and BOD to be test partners, with Darcy on the bench wud be a good combination. But again, theres till a few weeks of rugby left, we cud be lookin at more injuries to come. McGeechan wont be rushed in pickin replacements.
He mite be tempted to go for utility players because of the injury scares, Hook, Foden, Paterson et al can all play more than two positions, but havent shown the form.

  5. Stick to the rugby orange , we can all get political & slag each other off but surely theres different sites for that . Ive got no problems with the selections & I believe Darcy should go & for once I agree judging Earls on 1 bad game is wrong if you were going to do that then you wouldnt take any Munster players , but you msde your bed just try & lie in

  6. welcome back orange.
D'Arcy my fav for the job, after that Lewsey. Both in great form at the moment.

  7. Looks like orange2tuf has finally stopped crying and is back to regale us with his insightful comments.
Personally I think Tindall may do a good job. He's an excellent organiser of defenses, and has the physical attributes required for taking on the Bokkes, even if he probably won't last the entire 80 mins.
As a real dark horse I'd like to throw Jamie Robinson's name into the hat. Although an outside center, he continually plays well for the Blues (but it would mean moving BoD into 12, so maybe not the greatest suggestion I could make)

  8. Darcy should definitely be in to replace Shanklin at 12 for the Lions. He Had a terrific game against munster last weekend and a pretty good 6 nations campaign

From Darragh, on Fri 8 May 5:12PM
  9. Tindall lol dont rate the player (N) hook played a goood game last week but d'arcy will go =]

  10. well welsh actually.. but that just shows what a racist little waste of space you are quite frankly.
Hey, Keith Earls had a good game against Leinster! WHat did he miss... 7, 8 or 9 tackles, cant remember.
Obviopsuly you didnt read my post where i said i thought Darcy should be picked.
    Hahaha, what a @#$%

    From moggie2727, on Fri 8 May 3:51PM
  11. orange2tuf.......
    'ur an english idiot'......
if that is you , what a pathetic little loser
Tindall , when in form, is an explosive capable player. I would go with Hook, who can cover the entire midfield and 10, but Darcy would be a good choice too

    From moggie2727, on Fri 8 May 3:42PM
  12. Gutted for Shanklin , genuine quality player who would have been in with a good shout for a test starting place , for a long shot how about Dan Hipkiss , breaks tackles & gets over the gain line almost every time , been unlucky with injuries early on but hitting top form now , saying that though I do think Darcy will go & probably deserves to .

From firstchoicepm, on Fri 8 May 1:26PM
  13. I think D'arcy will probably be favourite, but dont discount Hook or Henson. Their all round talent and ability to slot in at so many positions could be crucial in such a physical tour. They have both not had good runs up to selections for the tour being made, but as wildcards, there are no other more talented gamebreakers in Britain or Ireland.

From Lee R, on Fri 8 May 1:11PM
  14. Mike Tindall ? Do the Lions need someone to muck out the horses ?

From BigRich, on Fri 8 May 12:06PM
  15. This is so sad, Tom is one of the nicest guys in the game and a real big match player. My condolences to him and I look forward to sseing him back or the Autumn Internationals.
O'Driscoll was a shoo-in for 13 in the tests but Tom would have done a great job off the bench at 11,12,13 or 14. Roberts can do that job now although he will probably start at 12. Don't discount Henson making the trip if he's fit as Geech always wanted to take him and now that Hook is playing 13 for the Hairspays he might be a dark horse but common sense says it will be Darcy, who completely outplayed 'My name is Earl' last Saturday

From BigRich, on Fri 8 May 12:05PM
  16. Got to be Gordon D'Arcy for the Lions. Great partner for Brian O Driscoll.

From hylmike, on Fri 8 May 10:52AM
  17. Im sorry for shanklin but to be honest its not a big blow. He always goes into contact with his head down, one hand on the ball and has it regularly taken off him. O driscol and roberts will be in the centre.

From Thomas, on Fri 8 May 9:58AM
  18. One thing will be needed is someone who can defend in SA I would suggest Mike Tindall

    From harry1947, on Fri 8 May 9:45AM
  19. Its an awful shame that any player should miss such an opportunity. I guess that's what separates rugby from the likes of soccer. Rugby players leave it on on the pitch, whereas soccer players can hold back and look after themselves. I feel for shanklin as he will prob miss out on the next tour due to his aging body. However, his loss will be someone's gain and, apart from being biased, I think it's got to be Darcy. His form is only getting better after his recent injury, and what a game he had against Munster.

From Vivian, on Fri 8 May 9:00AM
  20. Sad loss - how about Lewsey to replace him - he deserves it - he's played some of his best rugby towards the end of the season - can play in the center, fullback or wing and deserves his chance.
