Premier League - Poll: Toon should sack Barton

Eurosport - Sat, 09 May 12:19:00 2009

Eurosport-Yahoo! readers have voted overwhelmingly in favour of Newcastle United sacking bad-boy midfielder Joey Barton.

FOOTBALL Newcastle United Joey Barton - 80 per cent of Eurosport readers think Barton should be sacked after his latest disciplinary problems - 0

A whopping 80 per cent of the 14,600 votes received since Tuesday are in favour of Alan Shearer and the Magpies' board ditching the former Manchester City man after he followed his sending off against Liverpool for a disgraceful tackle on Xabi Alonso with an angry, dressing-room tirade at boss Shearer.

It is the latest in a long line of on and off-pitch disciplinary issues for Barton, who recently completed a prison sentence and alcohol rehabilitation programme following a street assault.

One question begs to be answered though: of the 20 per cent who think he should not be fired, what do you propose doing with a man who - aged 26 - shows no sign of modifying his violent, disrespectful behaviour?

Poll: Should Newcastle United sack Joey Barton?

Yes: 80 per cent (13,625

No: 20 per cent (3,434)

(17,059 votes as of 09.00 on Saturday May 9)

Readers' views on Joey Barton:

beachbabe: Barton has had about 20 chances to stop acting like an animal on and off the pitch, I think only teams like Birmingham, Millwall or Leeds would would suit a player like Barton.

Jon C: Barton is nothing short of a thug. He has proven his inabillity to curb his temperament both on and off the pitch on more than one occasion. And this creature is supposed to be a role model for young people! The sooner he is banned from the game for life, the better. He has had numerous chances to prove he has changed, and like many a time on the pitch, he has squandered those chances.

Tim B: Barton has to ask himself would any fan really pay good money and be proud to have him representing their club - I don't think so. Not only did he make another rash challenge but he had time to reflect and consider how he has jeopardised Newcastle's chance of staying up - I would expect a "sorry boss" to Shearer, not what he reportedly said! Newcastle is a proud club but having Barton in the team must be a total embarrassment for the fans.

Chopper: I am one of few people who thought that the bloke could change, I was obviously wrong. But for those people quick enough to say he shouldn't have been given another chance, just think of other footballers who have faced charges and come back such as Eric Cantona, Dennis Wise, Tony Adams, Steven Gerrard, Darren Ferguson, Lee Bowyer, Jonathan Woodgate and probably many more.

  1. Keep up the good work Joey, i'm your fan!!!!

  2. Maygbe if previous Managers had thrown him out of the game on the numerous other occasions of thuggery both on and off the pitch, it wouldn't have come to this situation.
There was a chance, at one time, to rehabilitate him. I'd have loved to have seen him enroled at one of the many professional martial arts clubs in Newcastle or the North East.
He would have quickly seen how little he is, along with realisation of how dangerous fighting can be.
Most importantly, he would have got some much needed mental discipline into him, and learned to turn his back and walk away from trouble and provocation.
BUT ITS TOO LATE NOW! He's used up every chance given to him by managers, and courts, and has no place at any club where he can be idolised by youngsters as a role model.
And don't start a chorus of " Oh my god! training this thug in martial arts?"
I firmly believe this wimp would have changed his ways, and if he did stray again and assault someone, (as he did so dispicably and cowardly in the past), the managers and courts would then take into account his aggression and dealt with him properly, as they should have done in the past, as he long ago past through the doors of 'last chance saloon'
The only hope now is that, someday, somewhere, he's going to start on someone again, only this time he's the one who isn't going to get back up. Then hopefully he'll just fade into obscurity.

    2. How can Shearer have a go at Barton, was Shearer Mr Clean?
    3. Newcastle fans think the answer to Newcastle's problems is to have a manager from their home town to keep them up instead of outsiders.

Just accept the fact you're going down, and who better to be in charge when you do, Mr Alan Newcastle Shearer.

  11. while i totally dispise barton as a player just look at some other incidents that have happened in the past. what about the woodgate/bowyer attack a few years ago and they were both allowed to carry on playing or even when roy keane ended alfie haalands career with about 34 seconds gone in a match, granted they where all reprimanded but surely keane should have been banned when it came out in his autobiography that he meant to do it. all im saying is that if you start banning players then your setting and dangerous precident that will need to be enforced at all time and not when the person in question is an unlikeable little ####. oh and alladyce please please dont bring him to the mighty burn in the summer, we dont want him!!!!!

  16. This guy has let Newcastle United down big time. The likes of Barton, Drogba and Ballack give footballs up and coming youngsters the completely wrong message on fair play and standards and they should be banned from playing the game permenantly. Having lived and married in Newcastle I respect this great Geordie club and the fans and hope that some miracle will keep them in the Premier league. Can't envisage the Premier league with Newcastle, but people like Barton give sides like Newcastle problems they don't need. Man U supporter.
