Nico Rosberg led a Williams one-two in practice for the Spanish Grand Prix after Formula One championship leader Jenson Button had set the early pace.
Rosberg, who has been fastest in eight of the season's 14 practice sessions to date without finishing higher than sixth in a race, clocked the day's quickest time of one minute 21.588 seconds at the Circuit de Catalunya.
Japanese team mate Kazuki Nakajima, who has yet to score a point this year after finishing only one of the four races, was second, 0.152 slower, in an afternoon session that saw Spain's double world champion Fernando Alonso third for Renault.
Rosberg's afternoon was clouded late in the second session however when he stopped with a mechanical problem.
"Today was our first run with the new aero components on the car and they all seemed to work well," said Rosberg. "They're giving us a few tenths extra per lap so we've made definite progress."
Button, chasing his fourth win in five races for Brawn GP, made a dream start in the morning with a best lap of 1:21.799 and was sixth later on. The leading times were all well inside Kimi Raikkonen's 2008 pole position for Ferrari of 1:21.813.
Saturday's qualifying will be crucial for a race that has been won by the driver on pole position for the past eight years.
Toyota's Italian Jarno Trulli was second in the morning ahead of the BMW-Saubers of Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld.
Champions Ferrari introduced a revamped car, with significant changes that included a new rear diffuser and aerodynamic package, after suffering their most disappointing start to a season since the championship started in 1950.
There was no obvious improvement, but Ferrari team boss Stefano Domenicali and both drivers said progress had been made.
"Sure, it's Friday and it's always difficult to draw conclusions, but the feeling is that we have closed the gap to the top cars," said 2007 champion Kimi Raikkonen who was 11th and 10th respectively.
Brazilian Felipe Massa, who was overall runner-up last year but has yet to score a point from the opening long-haul races, was ninth quickest in the morning and 15th in the second session.
"Today's classification is difficult to interpret and I reckon it doesn't represent the true pecking order," said Massa.
McLaren's world champion Lewis Hamilton, who has not been on the podium since last year, was 13th in the afternoon and altogether more unhappy.
"This is our true pace as you just saw," the Briton said in a terse exchange with reporters. "It's going to be a tough one."
"We are pushing but unfortunately we tried some upgrades and they are not working for me. There has been no improvement to the car whatsoever."
Force India's German Adrian Sutil missed the second session due to a fuel cell problem.

Adam L, open your eyes, didn't you see him driving the team taxi,oh pity you havn.t got live f1, you are behind the times:
well any sport that has a man called Randy De Puniet has got to be watched... MOTO GP
Tim, why so gloomy outlook? New car, new era. Haven't had rain in two races, so why not this Sunday? Either that or watch Pole Day qualifying.
F1 has died a death whoever gets pole wins there is no racing anymore the cars are so similar the last of the great drivers is Alonso unfortunately he is not in a competitive car more or less all of the current drivers could win if they have the car. Watching F1 is about as exciting as watching tires been changed in fact this is probably where races are won and lost. Thank god for moto GP were there is still Rossi
sex pervert max MOssseley sounds ideal to become a black cab taxi driver
time overdue for that sad O.A.P. to depart from F 1 & leave the honest burghers to organise racing
Touron assured us a while back that Pedro De La Rosa would be driving for Force India in Spain. I don't see any sign of him on the time sheets.
Williams have everything they need to win races - except - Brawn!
Not sure Ferrari have much of a future in this bleedin' recession,a?
Which reminds me, some cowson cut me up in a red Ferrari on Knightsbridge the other day. Thought he was the bloomin' dogs nackers in this car he did, roof down, sunglasses, on cigar in his gob drivin' like bloody Micheal Schummacher. You should have seen the cowsons face when I caught the back corner of his car with me front bumper on the taxi and tore all his back skirtin' off. Cor blimely it was bloody funny. Wont see him doin' that again in bleeding hurry.
Talking about hurry, have you met my mate Harry?? What a diamond bloke. Built like a brick toilet block with a todger like a guided missle.
Anyway, look after your grandmother and dont forget yer aunties birthday.
Well bless me bloomin'cotton socks I'm cream crackered.
Right hard bleedin' day I've had drivin' all over the place.
Gatwick to bloomin Elephant and Castle. Luv a duck mate. Bloody people gettin' me lost and no tips either.
Countries a mess, hardly anyone in London can even speak english now, I have to rely on bloomin' sign language to work out where most of the punters are going to. Its like a bloody game of charads these days. I asked one geezer where he was goin' and he run along the road with his arms out like a plane so I took him to psychiatric ward of the local hospital, well it was closer then Heathrow werent it a?
Well all change in F1, in it a?
Ferrari and Mclaren aint gonna see a podium all season. Great thing I say.
Once there is a spending cap on the teams you wont see or hear from Ferrari or Mclaren again.
Any way chief, off to choke the chicken with Mrs so see ya all later, or as they say in Spain...adios amigos.
Williams , spawny t wa ts . Lewis and Mclaren will win again soon enough. everyone on this forum that dos'nt agree with this is wrong. especially touronroute the stupid thick ba st ar d.
