Chris Lumsdon insists he would have taken a pay cut to stay at Carlisle.
The midfielder was in tears when manager Greg Abbott told him his five-year spell with the club was over as they were unwilling to extend his contract.
But the 29-year-old says he would have been willing to negotiate a reduced salary if he had been given the opportunity.
"When I went to see the manager he said he couldn't afford to keep me because the budget has been slashed," Lumsdon told The Cumberland News.
"But nobody asked me about the possibility of renegotiating my contract and taking a cut. I would definitely have thought about that, because everybody knows how much the club means to me.
"It's such a shock to be leaving. I've had the best five years of my career here and it's devastating."

We overed Danny G a contract coz if he doesnt sign and it goes to tribunal it looked good for us and we get more money (Personally would love it if he stayed).
In the case of the people he released the man is a joke and is out of his depth. He is gonna start next season and well be bottom at christmas then we will decide to get rid of him and we will be in same position as this year.
ABBOT OUT NOW, NOT 20 GAMES IN.
Let shrews have abbo and we can hav simmo back, manager exchange.
releasing the best players. signing the wrong players. selling westwood and hackney. offering graham a new contract even though he wont sign it. carlisle do what they do every 3 or 4 years, cash in. and just get relegated. @#$%.
