Rochdale boss Keith Hill has backed departed midfielder John Doolan to make a success of his new role at Blue Square South side Southport.The 34-year-old, who was signed by previous manager Steve Parkin in 2006, made 90 appearances for Dale and scored five goals.

He has taken up a player-coach role at Blue Square North side Southport with a ringing endorsement from Spotland boss Hill.

"John will be a very good coach, I have no doubt about that," said Hill.

"He has that opportunity now at Southport and I know he will put in the hard work and do everything he can to grasp that chance."
