Torres: Reds must spend for success

Mon 09 Jun, 03:15 PM

Fernando Torres has told Liverpool's co-owners they must splash the cash this summer to give the team any chance of winning the Premier LeagueThe Reds have not sampled league success since 1990 and Torres believes the only way to change that is to spend big money on top quality players the way Manchester United and Chelsea regularly do.

Liverpool - who recently announced a £33million loss in the financial year ending 31st July 2007 - have already spent on Udinese full-back Andreas Dossena, but Torres is hopeful the Italian's arrival will be the first of many.

"It's clear that they (United and Chelsea) have a lot of £20million or £25m players, and that difference is what separates us in the table," Torres told the Liverpool Echo.

"I hope that the club does what needs to be done and we can quickly catch them up.

"In order to compete with Manchester United and Chelsea, if we can't keep up with them economically, then we have to get it absolutely right in the transfer market."

Tom Hicks and George Gillett have endured a difficult relationship on Merseyside but Spanish ace Torres - who hit 24 Premier League goals last season - insists that the in-house feud has not affected him.

"It may have had more of an effect upon my team-mates," said Torres.

"But the truth is, that between the language and the fact that I don't pay much attention to that stuff, or to any of the problems, it hasn't affected me.

"Liverpool is a big club that knows how to isolate you from those issues in order to stay competitive."

Torres is currently preparing for Spain's opening match in Euro 2008 against Russia on Tuesday, but he also has his mind on domestic matters.

The 24-year-old surpassed Ruud van Nistelrooy's record for goals scored by a foreign striker in a debut Premier League campaign, but he is wary of the 'second season syndrome' ahead of his return to Liverpool.

"The second season is always the more difficult. People know all about me now, although I know more about my opponents as well," added Torres.

"But there's no doubt that I will have to account for the fact that I am better known from now on."

  1. The idea of Ronaldino going to Man City is the most retarded thing ive heard in football. Its like asking Maradona if he wants to play for Wolves....come on, i know the boy's gone a bit wayward this season but he aint a down and out and im sure he hasn't gone insane,yet...

  2. lol my bro..i agree with u on only a few things nicandmart1.. yea i agree liverpool have to spend for success like chelsea n man u are doing n i hope they get started soon enough..barry seems to be a great addition that i hope it would be among many new additions to the squad..we need quality that is...but i have to disagree that gerrard n torres are the only big name players for liverpool..you can't leave out mascherano who once man u sought after..n that shows he is a big name player, people know him...n carragher? sure he is not a big name player but he is one of the best defenders in the world...but carra is a hit with the fans..reina is also a good player i admit sometimes reina seems unconvincing but he is an excellent shot stopper...now liverpool has a good spine in the team we have reina, carra, mascherano, gerrard,torres..liverpool just have to build around it..thats it exactly...simple..n liverpool too have a good crop of youngster just benitez aint too keen on using youngsters..thats it actually..i know babel, insua, leiva, skrtel, n agger will develop into good players...it might be true that liverpool fans deserve better but liverpool are striving towards it...so we can wait...n as it goes...you'll never walk alone..all da way liverpool...true in n out reds fan...

  3. torres is right, liverpool dont have strength in depth. man u n chelsea have about twenty first team players all fighting for places and if you look past liverpools first eleven they've got nothing. the owners need to start spending big and bringing in big name players cause at the moment they're not going to top the premiership with the squad they've got. they have the best fans in the country with maybe newcastle as the exception and they like the newcastle fans deserve better. at the moment gerrard and torres are the only really big name players in the squad that could get in at united or chelsea. if you're going to top the premier league you need strength in depth and liverpool just havn't got it and its a shame for such a loyal fan base.
