Intercontinental Rally Challenge leads way with new safety innovation on Belgian Ypres Rally.
The Belgian Ypres Rally, the third round in the 2008 Intercontinental Rally Challenge, will see the debut of an important new safety innovation later on this month.
"Under the plans a yellow LED warning light will be fitted to every car, which will act as a complement to the traditional yellow warning flags that are displayed on a stage in the event of a problem for any other competitors on the stage," explained a statement to the media.
"In order to improve the visibility of the flags, the light will illuminate just in front of the driver - just like any other system warning light on the car.
"The system works using the existing GPS tracking infrastructure, and it has been tested extensively in the past. However, the Ypres Rally Belgium marks the first occasion when it will actually be used in competition.
"If successful, the system will be used on a number of different events next year but the Belgian Ypres Rally will be the first time that it is actually used in competition."
