Championship - McCormick bailed

Eurosport - Mon, 09 Jun 21:25:00 2008

Plymouth goalkeeper Luke McCormick has been bailed for seven days after facing charges of causing death by dangerous driving following a fatal car crash on the M6 in Staffordshire.

FOOTBALL Luke McCormick Plymouth Argyle - 0

The 24-year-old Championship player, who was unhurt in the collision, appeared before magistrates in Stoke-on-Trent where he was also charged with drink-driving and driving without insurance, police said.

McCormick was seen hurriedly leaving the court with his face obscured by a blue hooded top before getting into the passenger seat of a dark BMW convertible.

McCormick is a former England youth international and has twice been named Plymouth's young player of the season.

Police appealed for witnesses to the collision between McCormick's black Range Rover and a Toyota Previa just before 0600 BST on Saturday near Junction 16 on the southbound carriageway of the M6 motorway close to Stoke.

Arron Peak, 10, and his brother Ben, 8, died after the Toyota left the road and went down an embankment, hitting several trees on the way.

Their 37-year-old father Philip Peak was seriously injured with a suspected broken neck and remains in hospital.

The boys' mother, Amanda Peak, was also in court and said: "No parent should have to go through the nightmare we have gone through.

"Phil, my husband, is not only having to come to terms with the loss of his sons but he also has to cope with the serious injuries he sustained and remains in hospital."

Three other passengers in the Toyota - a man and two boys aged eight and 15 - were slightly injured. They were travelling to Silverstone for a motorsports festival.

It is understood that McCormick had spent the evening at the wedding of former Argyle team-mate David Norris.

  3. jimak you dont understand the feelings of people ??????????????? people feel angry about what that drunken idiot has done , he has enough money to get a driver take him home , let alone buy insurance , this man has desroyed a family , we are not cocerned about him being a geat goalkeeper or of his feelings , because if he had feelings for anyone he would not have driven , and people can say what they like about him as its the feelings within them saying it , you on the other hand is the same as the idiot goalkeeper , you have none , because if ou did you would understand how these people feel , football cannot even be thought of at this time only the two young boys who had life taken from them by a selfish drunk , to all those who spoke how they feel well done ,

  7. being a plymouth supporter and regular follower of the players , i have to say what a idiot luke has been, I am a parent and feel so much for the family at this moment in time, I am shocked and horrified that luke has driven whilst drunk, not been insured and then to go and kill 2 young boys and deep down kill the mother and farther of these children inside. I think you should be made to pay the price and Go to prison for a long time, Your career is finished as a player and i say GOOD. you dont deserve to be in the public eye, and i hope you one day realise what a terrible thing you have done.. I CANNOT AND WILL NOT EVER FORGIVE YOU.. YOU WILL NEVER PLAY FOR US AGAIN

  10. Just to comment on boozingblue's post on the last page: No I was not referring to Luke himself, I just know that he is gonna get booted from Argyle and now Paul will need to find a replacement goalkeeper that can do Argyle good.

I was not making comments (good or bad) about the crash or the family at all so read before you talk next time boozingblue.

  11. have you got kids jimak?? if so i pray to god the same doesnt happen to them but thing is this was so avoidable, if this was a genuine traffic accident then fair enough, still would be traumatic but would be accepted...you say he'll get 4years...whoopeedoo....he'll still come out and get on with his life....them kids wont!!! and his career a wreck? well lee hughes came out and got himself a club straight away. In this day and age its not like people arent aware of dangers of drink driving, christ you can be all over the place WALKING when pssed, so as soon as you sit behind a ton of metal with an engine whilst drunk then you may aswell just be holding a gun to a little 8yr old boys head, yes he'll feel guilt but will that compare with a mothers/fathers/uncles/aunts/grandads/cousins/school friends etc grief....DOUBT IT.......and wasnt wishin the guy dead, just to see if he can avoid traffic in middle of a motorway unlike the poor people whose lives he ruined

  12. Its quite sick reading peoples thoughts, wishing death on someone is completely unbelievable and extremely inhumain. Yes, he's in the wrong and will have the book thrown at him, but think how he must be feeling as well.

I'm a huge football fan and rate McCormick as one of the best goalkeepers in the Championship. But what he's done is wrong and he'll probably spend the next four years in jail and his career is a wreck. But he'll know he's done wrong and he doesnt need muppets wishing death upon himself.

  13. wot a total tw@....let punishment fit the crime....stand him in the middle of the M6 and lets just see how good his goalie reflexes are.....as the commentators say.....lets hope one goes straight into his chest

    From davdavdav98, on Mon 9 Jun 2:09PM
  14. who cares if he is a professional footballer or not. The fact is he was driving drunk and caused the death of 2 young innocent victims and serious injured another. He should go to prison for the rest of his life.......even that is too good for him. think of the family of the innocent victims, nothing will bring them back.

  16. Aaron, I too am from Plymouth and would hope that every decent person who supports Argyle would disassociate themselves from your shallow and callous comments. My 8 year old son and I have been to see Luke whilst training and he always took time to speak and say hello. But if these charges are proved he has no defence and deserves all the law throws at him. All true Argyle supporters extend their condolences to the family of the boys and THEY are the ones in our thoughts and prayers.

  18. Re: SID,

The Toyota Previa is an MPV.

So i'm guessing it has a third row of seats...so six people is not too much

    From pc0046, on Mon 9 Jun 8:50AM
  19. Sid - get your facts right before you spout off. The Toyota Previa has 7 or 8 seats depending on what version it was, on that basis the 2 adults and 4 boys were travelling in it legally and safely. There is no argument at all against this person who was driving drunk and un-insured - he was 100% to blame!
