French Open - Federer: I'll never feel pressure again

Eurosport - Tue, 09 Jun 10:29:00 2009

Roger Federer said he would never again feel any pressure in his career after clinching his first French Open title with a 6-1 7-6(1) 6-4 victory over Swede Robin Soderling.

TENNIS 2009 Roland-Garros Roger Federer Finale - 0

"It might be the greatest victory of my career," said the 27-year-old Swiss, who equalled Pete Sampras's record of 14 Grand Slam titles and became the sixth man to win all four majors.

"It takes away so much pressure. Now, I can play in peace for the rest of my career.

"Nobody will never tell me again that I have not won Roland Garros."

World number two Federer was presented with the Coupe de Mousquetaires by Andre Agassi, the only man before him to have won the four Grand Slams on all surfaces.

"That he gives me the trophy, it's too much, it was very nice of him to come here this year," Federer told French TV channel France 2.

"He told me 'it seems like it's destiny for you, you deserve it'."

Federer thanked the crowd for their warm support throughout the tournament.

"It feels good to be on the podium as the winner for once," he said. "It is a magical moment."

The Swiss had lost the three previous French Open finals against four-times champion Rafael Nadal, who was beaten in the fourth round by the 23rd-seeded Soderling.

"Congratulations for your wonderful tournament," he told the Swede.

A smiling Soderling said he was beaten by the "best player in history."

"Yesterday, with my coach (Magnus Norman) we were joking, like nobody can beat me 10 times in a row," he said, referring to Federer having beaten him in their nine previous encounters.

"We were wrong."

  1. HAHAHAHA comment no': 52 i am a huge fan of Roger Federer but i pray for your sanity you don't mean what you have just written, i wish you were right but sadly your not, you are crazy to even write that stuff.

  4. teapsky of course he was exhausted but..wait a minute isnt he number one afterall? i mean, come on he was forced to play under much worse circumstances, after several five setters and he has managed to come through it with much more pressure(on grand slams) .. if he cant handle the pressure after one 3 set match I don't know why we should consider him a big thread.. anyways i do like nadal too and i agree he was very tired but i insist that this is not the only reason and that is proved by hs RG result this year.. players at top form tend to react differently(meaning better) on grand slam occasions, but he did'nt at this particular time while until soderling's match he had an easier draw.. federer on the other hand was not at his best form and that was clear but was remains in the memory is that he managed to come through the tough moments and that's what defines a true champion!
as someone in RF forum said, noone has put a * next to agassi's french open victory because had to beat medvedev and not sampras, who by the way has lost very early too!

anyways, i do think that nadal's people( maybe coach i dont know) had pushed him way to much this year in order to win everything and maintain all these points that his body crushed(considering his heavy gaim).. i just hope he can recover soon in order to see him compete in his normal rythme again in London...

    gooo rogi!

  6. TEAPSKY, if Federer won because Nadal was exhasted and Nadal had an injury - THEN dont you think you must be fair and take into account the fact that Federer has mononucleosis last year and he made it worse by playing on with it being undetected for some time, and the fact that he had a back injury in 2008?. You seem to have a selective and convenient memory. Perhaps a reading about Mononucleosis and how bad it can be and about the seriousness of a back injury will enlighten you, unless you ignore it due to bias.

Hum, you ommit to say that in THAT final, Nadal was completely exhausted and yes Federer won but another top 5 player would have done the same. It took both Djokovic and Federer to beat Nadal at Madrid, not Federer alone.

  8. I agree with M.V. ,Deep Sea Diver and Jelena k. My comment that Roger Federer is great, best player in the world at this moment and will be best Tennis player in history. This guy is beat Pete Sampras, agassi and other best player in world in all his career and become champion in 2003(wimbledon). He is the best because now his is 27yrs and got 14 grand slam. When we compare RF with Nadal the competitive starting when Roger 4years ago to win French. Nadal beat Roger in that year till 2008 in final .
The reason why Roger is the best because he have never given up to win French Open and whe did it this year finally. He is the best and will continue to win more grand slam.

  9. Now that pressure is off the Chosen One of Tennis...
Let me bring on the predictions for the next two years....call me the most optimisitic guy on earth if you want...
Wimbledon 2009 - Federer - Beats British Pig Murray 6-0 6-1 6-0 (Nadal knocked out of first round by world no 209)
US Open 2009 - Federer - Beats Joker Novak Djokovic 6-2 6-0 6-2 (Nadal knocked out of quaterfinals by robin soderling)
    Austrailan Open 2010 - Federer - Beats Nadal 6-1 6-1 6-1 (Completes non-calender year GRAND SLAM)
French Open 2010 - Federer - Mauls Nadal 6-0 6-0 6-0 (The Emperor of Clay mows down the King of Clay)
Wimbledon 2010 - Federer - Thrashes Nadal 6-0 6-0 6-0 (The only player in history to get triple Bagels at both french and wimby...Rafael Nadal)
US Open 2010 - Federer - Annihilates Nadal 6-0 6-0 6-0 (Completes the calender year GRAND SLAM)
Federer decides to stop playing tennis with 21 Slams in order to put an end to the humiliation he has been heaping on Nadal.

  10. I couldnt agree more "Half a Brain" (lol what a name!)
it's exactly what i thought!! nobody can say that federers victory is less valuable because of nadal's absence.. after all what is most difficult is to be in the final and federer had no easy way through it! but he managed to do it after 3 hard times(acasuso, haas, del potro) and fight, something that for their one reasons didnt manage neither djokovic nor nadal to do( at this particular time, i dont imply that they are not fighters in general).
so that's what counts...the consistency and determination that one time he WILL get it.. who will remember the runner-up afterall? and even if someone insists on the fact that if nadal was here we would durely have a different result, well just check on the exact previous final result ON CLAY... you'll find your answer

  11. Federer can only beat who turns up, Nadal LOST! this isn't Federers fault, he won the tournament fair and square and all the worlds best were there. end of story, and i prefer Nadal also, but if he lost early then so be it, and thats his fault not Federers. Federer the best ever??? i still go with Laver different era but won 2 grand slams, that will never happen again,

  13. I think that the fact he did not win RG against Rafa is in the back of his head, but Rafa was also lucky, if he played Federer in this form he would had lost (because of the injury and form at the moment) and that would be painful for him, so maybe universe made everybody happy, and we`ll never know what would of happened if it was Fed- Rafa final. But i must say that i am delighted for Federer, this is a proof that if you believe something you`ll achieve it, hats off for determination. In the end I still prefer Rafa (sorry) :).

  14. well done federer, you will win at least 5 more slams before you decide to cur the strings, congrats and good luck for wimbledon

  15. nicholas_con2: hah, true. Federer did indeed not win it against Nadal, which will make next year's Roland Garros - assuming Federer and Nadal both make it next time through - an interesting match to watch.

As others have rightly stated (though, perhaps, next time with a little more tact), Nadal did not make it past Soederling; yet, I would say that that is no way bad for Nadal. He's been playing quite a bit and so while he may be extremely gracious in defeat (see his final RG press conference - convinced me after 3/4 years of regarding him with suspicion), he may find that swimming pool relaxing and rejuvenating enough to keep himself in top form for the rest of the season. Good luck to Nadal, but congratulations to Federer and Soederling for making it to the RG final.

Roger Federer and Pete Sampras: The Most Prolific—Not Greatest—of All Time
It's really impossible to compare different eras and the game and style has changed so much, not to mention the effect technology has and how the surfaces have changed over time. Roger will always be one of the greatest,if he wins another slam people will say the greatest of all time until someone surpasses his grand slam titles. Pete Sampras called Roger the greatest of all time in his opinion today after Roger won and at the end of the day, that's all it will always be. A matter of opinion.

  19. nicholas_con2, and everyone can say he Roger never won it against Agassi, McEnroe, Connors, etc.. That does not make sense does it? History never cares about the looser. He will be down as a winner of RG, full stop. And Federer's resolute to win the RG must be taught in classes. 4 years in a row he reaches the final, including being gunned down last year, so if Nadal failed to show up this year that is his problem. He was not good enough to reach a 5th final in a row while Federe managed to fight back when he was on the death row (what a come-back against Haas who was ''one point away from serving for match'').
